My response here should really be in the CE thread, but think what the hundreds of billions of dollars used for Iraq could do for education, training, healthy worker incentives, bike lanes, recreational activities for kids, anti-obesity initiatives.... and on and on. It could have paid dividends for decades to come with lower medical costs, better quality of life, a more productive and happy work force.

But, hey, then we wouldn't have the all-important pics of Saddam in his underwear.

Right on.

How can we fight terror when we're all just dumb and fat.

We are, as a nation, less educated (based on international standards) and fatter than some of our other international neighbors.

I don't know how accurate this is: http://www.annecollins.com/weight_he...t-stats-uk.htm , but now the UK is RIGHT behind us.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I guess it's pretty "general health" related but quickly and unavoidably moves into the political. The other thought that came to mind was that we are also closing a bunch of military bases to free up funds to carry on our military activities in other countries, at the expense of the many people who will soon be laid off from those bases (oh, yeah, the booming economy will pick them up!). Perhaps the bases really should be closed but the timing makes it a bit questionable, IMHO.
