Nebraska Man Sheds More Than 450 Pounds

A Nebraska man who weighed more than half a ton when he checked into a South Dakota hospital in June has lost more than 450 pounds.

Patrick Deuel dropped about 420 pounds after hospital staffers put him on an exercise program and restricted him to a 1,200-calorie-a-day diet. That was in preparation for gastric-bypass surgery performed in late October. Since the operation, Deuel has lost about 40 additional pounds, the Associated Press reported.

He's still in the hospital recovering from an infection. It's expected he'll go home to Valentine, Neb., late this month. He'll receive regular checkups from a doctor and will have health aides at home to help him avoid resuming the overeating that caused him to grow so immense.

Deuel now weighs about 650 pounds and says he hopes to get down to 240 pounds. He weighed 1,072 pounds when he checked into the hospital.

Yeah, they sure do.
We had a Miata vs. 18 wheeler once. After putting a young girl into six separate bags, I had to intercept two women who were bring a 5 YO girl up to look at the bloodstain. I nearly came unglued.

six separate bags???? I take it she was in the Miata.

Why would they want to bring the 5 year old to the scene? To scar her for life?

Yeah, she was in the Miata. Hit black ice and went side-on into the on-coming truck. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when these two came up the embankment with that kid in tow. You really wonder what goes on in their heads. It's hard enough on emergency workers, and we've seen a lot. We actually keep our younger firefighters away from these really bad ones if we can. Even at 20ish they haven't got the life experience to deal with this, let alone a five YO kid. Me and two other senior officers (all older guys) did this recovery.

I don't think I could handle that type of a job.

I'm sure just when you think you have seen it all something bigger and badder happens, right?

It can be a tough job sometimes, but you've got to balance the bad calls out with the good ones. We do have some saves, put out lots of fires and rescue the odd cat.

This guy was in a Rick Riley column in Sports Illustrated a couple months ago. I think it said that his goal was to get down into the 300 LB range and go to a Nebraska football game.

Am I reading that right? He lost 420 lbs before he even got the surgery?
