The topic caught my eye because we had a safety meeting at work this morning on dental hygene. A Doctor from the University of Arkansas School of Medical Sciences spoke. Part of the discussion was on teeth bleaching. Some points based on my recollection:
There's several ways to go all of which the Doc said work to some extent. The whitening strips take about two weeks with a cost of $50-$60 bucks. A dentist can fix you up with a mouthpiece like device that you wear for a period of time each day with some gel in it. Cost about $200. For about $800 dollars there's some sort of machine a dentist can use on you. Sounded a bit like a sandblaster.
The doctor warned that if you have crowns or colored filings, they will not change color with the surrounding tooth, which could lead to some poor results. She also warned about getting the bleach on the gums.
The doctor said whitening toothpaste contained an abrasive that kind of gave a sanding action to help clean teeth better.
That's all I recall from the whitening/bleaching discussion.
