First of all, EVERYBODY seems to SMOKE! We spent a fair amount of time in pubs and there were few people in them who weren't lit up (in more ways than one! ). It was really tough staying long enough to have a meal but they really are good places to eat. Ironically, there was an initiative to ban smoking in public places going on but it seems as though it's a more limited ban based on
THIS SOURCE. They attribute this unhealthy habit that they are spending billions to combat to Sir Walter Raleigh who brought tobacco back from the Americas.
Although my wife and I both felt that people in general looked thinner, there were also stories in the media about the growing obesity problem.
HERE'S AN OLDER ONE. We attributed it to all the walking - running in many cases as in "The Tube"- they do to get around but, apparently, there's still a significant problem. It was rare to see people in Paris who were obese (we were there when Arafat died but no outward evidence to that).
Seems like there was another one but it's not coming to me now. I need sleep....
