Don't know how many on here have this disease, or have family member that do (I have several), but I am always looking for information about the road to a possible cure. I found this article on the NY Times website so I thought I would share.

Glad to see that you are looking for info for a possibile cure to diabetes. I have had type 1 since I was 2 years old. My family and I are involved with JDRF(juvinelle diabetes research foundation) and usually particpate at their walks.

The one things I wish is that the general public would stop talking about how if you eat too much that you will get diabetes...not true. You can get type 2 diabetes from overeating and being overweight but type 1 is something you cannot conrtol as far as getting it. Just upsets me that so many people believe this misconception.

Ripstone, unfortunately it is just the same here.

My brother developed Type 1 diabetes when he was 17 after having a virus around the membrane of his heart which they think must have also attacked his pancreas. Whenever anyone in our family talks about it to people we often get "Is that because he drank too much sugar as a kid?" or "Is he overweight?" etc. etc.

It would be so good if there was more education on this so people become aware about the differences. There is always advertising about type 2 ("Are you shaped like an apple or pear.. then you are more at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes") when no one explains about Type 1.

Luckily in the States people are more aware, and there is more available to you. Lantus isn't even available here. My brother managed to bring some back from America when he was at a summer camp there and has tried to make NZ Diabetes aware of it. Lantus will end up being $100 for a month's supply if it ever becomes available here until the government agrees to subsidise.

Emz, that's unfortuante that your bro can't have unlimited acess to the insulin he wants. I am actually on an insulin pump so I take Humalong only.

Did your bro go to a diabetes camp in the States? I'm gonna be a counseler at a Diabetes camp in Iowa over the summer.

Hey Ripstone,
Yep he went to a diabetes camp in New Hampshire I think it was, he has been there twice and next year will be his third year.

He had such a great time and learnt so much, it looks alot of fun. Which camp in Iowa will you be going to?

The camp is called Hertko Hollow and I actually applied to be a counsler but haven't got the job yet....hopefully I will cus I think it would be a lot of fun to be a counseler and I think I could teach the campers a thing or two about diabetes and nutrition...hopefully...hehe.

Hey Ripstone,
Yeah for sure that sounds awesome, I just looked up the camp and it looks really nice. I don't think my brother could go there though as it doesn't look like Camp America go through them. (They sort out all the visas and that.)

Do you have MSN or AIM or anything like that? Might be quite cool to talk to you!

Ciao
