Portland Oregon joins 48 other cities across the US to become a team who sponsers a semi-pro female full contact football team in the Women's Football Alliance.
Yesterday I auditioned for and was accepted onto the team as their oldest (by a long shot) player. My tryout times and scores were in the upper percentile of all potential players on the field so I did not just squeak in. Practice starts in Oct and our season is in the spring.
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!!!!

Why am I not surprised?
Congrats, Karla. Kick some butt!!

Congrats on making the team. We played 6 on 6 football (co-ed) on Saturdays when I was in high school - totally not sanctioned and only amongst ourselves (people from band) but it was truly fun. Tackling (landing) can sure knock the wind out of you when you're outweighed by 50-60 pounds (but then we had no helmets or pads ) .
When you play the KC team, I'll come watch (okay, if it's played here, not there.)
You got a date sweetie! Can't wait to meet you.

Hey now. Okay, so you got me there. I did have to beg forgiveness a tiny bit for this one but only a tiny bit. Who really could blame me for doing the tryout?

That seems to be the most common response from folks. The second is, "Nuh uh" followed by "Are you out of your fucking mind?!"

Congrats, Karla - you kick such ass.
Props to you too brah! Interesting note about this is that I went to this tryout with ZERO prep. The only thing I had going on was the bodybuilding training routine and the nutrition plan that you gave me. This proves without a doubt that training for bodybuilding (AKA lifting heavy) is quite enough training to keep me in very reasonable performance shape. The tryouts had some strength elements to it but mostly it was cardio. We ran patterns, 10, 30 and 800 feet races all for time. I logged the second fastest 10 time and came in 3rd for the 800. Yeah Buddy!!!
Remember how I argued with you at first about not doing cardio. LOL! I get it now.

I once saw at female football league that was similar to that. It was totally about the T and A and not about the game. Foruntately this is legit. Cause as you know from your own experience. Football is FUN

These young ladies were some athletes too. There were a couple of bigger girls but the majority were some sort of athletic. It was great fun to race them and come out ahead now and then.

800-foot race? That doesn't seem to make much sense for football!
Of course, we were tested in the mile-run for college baseball. Yeah, that's a good measure of sport-specificity.
Change foot to yards in races above. My bad. I don't know why the tryout times are done like that but my understanding is that is it is a standard for football tryouts. Honestly, I have never been allowed to be at a tryout before so I would not know.

Yards makes even less sense!
That's like having a bodybuilder tryout and having them do algebra.

LOL!
Actually I thought the tests had a lot of relevance. The 800-yard one was done at the very end and the purpose of that one is to check for "heart". It tests your ability to do grueling full out work for 2 hours and then do a semi-long run after. Some of the girls just walked it. Others reached deep and went for it. I paced myself on the run and came in 3rd from all the girls. I could have pushed harder but not too much. This test showed me that some of the chicks needed to do some better conditioning (overall) and it also showed me that my weightlifting training was KICK-ASS for performance testing.
I mean, who would think that lifting your ass off for 11-months would make it so that you can do an 800 yard run for time and do so well?
The 10-20-30 yard timed runs all make a world of sense for football. As did all the timed pattern tests. They want to find the running backs, safeties and wide receivers and these do that.
The strength and balance tests all made sense too I thought.
It reminded me a tiny bit of the conditioning tests that we did in the Army and the USMC. And this sport is probably the most similar to the military type of training that I have done. It is full body, full contact. You need to be strong and have endurance forever.
