I am talking playing ability only, not team record or super bowl wins.

The Winner Is

This guy if he stayed healthy may have had something to say...

Chris Berman was the speaker at a meeting I attended about ten years ago. He told a story about interviewing Paul Brown, live, back when ESPN first started. Berman said he was nervous since Brown was such a NFL legend. He asked Brown who the greatest running back of all time was. Without hesitation, Brown says, "Red Grange." Berman asks, "What about Jim Brown...OJ Simpson....he rushed for over 2000 yards. Grange never came close to those numbers." Paul Brown admitted that they were great, but not as good as Grange. Berman asks, "If Grange were playing today, how many yards could he get in a season?" Brown replies, "700-800." Berman now gets nervous, he doesn't want to make an eighty year old legend look foolish on live TV, but he is a journalist. He presses on, "700-800 yards, that's not great." Paul Brown replies, "The man is 65 years old." Berman was speechless for probably the only time in his career.

I have to agree with Barry Sanders, especially with the offensive lines he had to work with.

Barry Sanders is the popular (and fairly obvious choice)

However you can't fail to rule out Jim Brown, the guy was a freak of nature

Sanders or Jim Brown....

Brown did an insane amount of yardage considering he played such a short time. Sanders played on a horrible team and still produced year after year which says a ton about him.
