OK, so I found this site and I have been reading a number of posts and have been inspired to post myself. I am not sure I am in the right spot but here goes....
I found this site after doing a little web searching for a fitness and nutrition routine that works for me and actually makes some sense. Over the last 4 months I have lost 25 lbs. eating better and running and doing some park pushups, pullups, situps, lunges, etc.
For the last 7 years I took a ‘break’ from working out. In those 7 years I built a house, had three kids, got a busy job, etc. Pretty good excuses to quit working out (or so I thought at the time).
Anyway, 4 months ago I ripped a suit coat due to my girth, and it was then I realized that this was just the beginning. In a few more years I could be pretty huge... 5-10 lbs of fat gain a year and I was going to be at the big and tall store. I guess all the business lunches, dinners, and fast food wasn't the optimal diet plan. And my 12 oz. curls weren't quite cutting it anymore. So I have decided to get back into shape.
In the good old days I played some college football, lifted constantly, played a lot of sports for hobbies, and ate whatever I wanted. I weighed about 215 (at 6-1) and could bench 375 and squat 550.
Running and condtioning was my weakness, but my bodyfat was about 12% with all the working out. That is why I am trying to run a marathon this year, I want to do something that I previously believed impossible for me.
This is surely going to be a process as I learn more and figure out what is best for working out and my schedule. I am going to try and do this outside, no gym, as much as possible. Being inside an office most of the day has made it very important to me to workout outside as much as possible. I may get weights, and some basic equipment for home use though as needed.
My goals are pretty simple but also pretty disparate:
Whittle my fat self down to about 10-12% bodyfat
-run a marathon under 5 hours in 2009
-do 25 pullups
-bench 225 lbs. 20 times
Me, currently:
I am at 20.7% bodyfat, 219 pounds
My longest run has been 15 miles pretty slowly, about 11:30/min. pace. My pace will need to be a bit better to get under the 5 hr mark.
I can do 14 pullups with good form and full extension
Bench – 225 lbs. x 9 times
I will try and post photos on a monthly basis and track my progress as I have time to do so....
Thank you all for your posts, so much great information on here to work with and learn from.
just curious - why pick a high rep goal like 225 x 20 rather than something like 300 x 5 (or a 1RM goal) for an exercise (bench) that is a strength movement and not generally considered an endurance movement?
Good question, I have some minor shoulder problems from old sports injuries that seem to be agravated by heavy bench pressing. I have no problems if I stay light and infrequent (2 sessions per month) on the bench press. I talked to a friend who is an othopedic surgeon and he said it is probably impingement syndrome that is minor.... I should probably actually go see him and get a real understanding of what it is.
Also, 225 for reps is the NFL combine standard for testing. I have a few friends who went to the combine and it was something we sort of worked on / dreamed about while working out for football.
I think I don't have the time or dedication to do a training log. Are most training logs kept up daily/weekly? I am not sure I would always have time to keep up with that.

Since it'd be your log, you'd get to decide how to do it and how often to update.
Some people list the details of each workout; some summarize; some just pop in every so often and let us know how they're doing. Some chat about hobbies, work, daily life, and new ideas while others stick purely to workouts or nutrition. Some write stuff up from scratch to post here while others copy and paste a log from elsewhere to post here or just put up a daily link to the program or site where they log food.
Whatever works for you.
And as for this "keep up" stuff...we're supposed to keep up?!? I'm in trouble then.

You've got a pretty decent baseline for not having worked out in 7 years, but because of that your goals are attainable.
My goals are similar (marathon in 2010)m but I'm starting from a next to nothing baseline (back surgery), and it'd be inspirational to see you make it.
Thanks Jim for the support. The marathon seems daunting, I agree. I am running a half marathon on Saturday. It is my first running race of my life, should be interesting. When I started running my goal was to see if I could do a 10k but I realized after a few months I should dream a little bigger. I have never done any running I'm my life and I am amazed that even I could build up the mileage and be able to (hopefully) do a half marathon.
Good luck to you as well Jim with the back surgery, if you can get through that surely you can do a marathon!
Ran the half marathon, did it in 2:17. I think that makes my pace about 10:30 per mile. It was pretty difficult for me, but I think the marathon in July is still doable. If I can drop 10 lbs. of bodyfat and increase my mileage by then it should make it much easier......
As for starting a log... if you asked a mod to move this thread to the log section, I think you'd already have one.

Would my sporadic posting, like what I have done so far qualify for a log? I will update on progress on weight, bodyfat, goals, etc. I just am to lazy to enter in all of my workout info.

Definitely.

Well, I am solidly at 214-216 lbs. these days. Dang, trying to get to 205 (ish) or so by the end of July is going to be hard!
The running is going great, 30-35 miles weekly. My speed seems a bit better as well. I am doing one interval workout per week, one long run, and 2-3 shorter runs. I keep dreaming I can get closer to the 4:15 / 4:30 range for the marathon.
Weight training 3 times a week, hitting the whole body only once per week. Also trying to do a bit of core work and stretching, both of which are new to me.
If I can make some more progress and get down to 205 I will post a another pic, not much use to post a pic with such a small change in weight.

@theburns: keep it up, dude! Actually, as I take a llok at your pic, your not so fat as what I think before I saw it. (You just need to reshape your body. )
