Default Is this progress really as bad as I see it to be?

First pic - 2004
started lifting - 2006
Second pic - 1 week ago 2008

Weight in 2004 - 135 lbs
Weight in 2008 - 188 lbs

don't ask how that is over a 40 lb gain with relatively little bodyfat gain. I certainly don't look like I weigh that much for only 5'9"

at 22 years old going on 23 i can't really complain b/c i know i've got a long time and am young, but it's still kinda interesting that i wouldn't look big at all or like i even lift at this weight. of course i put a lot of emphasis into my legs and back side, so maybe that's where most of my weight is.

btw this is a list of my diet of what i eat pretty much every day, except for the can of tuna which is alternated for chicken every other day. i'd say the quality of my nutrition is the biggest reason for my concerns in lack of quality size gains, b/c it is so perfect imo...

meal 1:
1/2 serving natural yogurt
1 serving oats
1 cup mixed fruit
1.5 scoops whey
1 serving antioxidant blend
1 multi vitamin

pre workout supps:
3g cee
1.5g aee
300mg caffeine anhydrous
4g beta alanine

during workout:
10g bcaa's

pwo:
45g waxy maize starch
3g cee

15 min. later:
25g whey

meal 2:
7oz grilled chicken
1 serving oats
1 banana

meal 3:
1 can tuna
1 serving oats
1 apple

meal 4:
8oz sirloin steak
2 servings broccoli/cauliflower mix
6 fish oil caps

meal 5:
4 egg whites
2 whole eggs
5 slices turkey bacon
2 servings carrots
6 fish oil caps

meal 6:
2 servings lowfat cottage cheese
1 scoop whey protein
1 serving olive oil
6 fish oil caps

currently doing hyper 1 from NROL.

Huge difference! Good job.

188lbs at 5' 9". Makes me question how good I look at 6'1" and the same weight.

Yeah you look like you're mega bombing the protein and lacking teh carbz. Plus at maintenance or surplus, 1 - 1.25g/lb of target bodyweight is all you need. Otherwise it's just expensive fuel (and doesn't taste as good as bagels ). Food subtype is a distant, distant concern over overall amounts.

Size wise, looks like you made your strong points... erm... stronger? Looking at that first pic you've got a hell of a core. That sorta grew along with the rest of you so proportionally you're kinda in the same boat. I think you'd benefit from a specialization routine.

Also, I'd dump the WMS and the BCAAs. Unless you're habitually undereating protein (unlikely) BCAAs do nothing but lighten your wallet. Using regular whey protein nets all the benefits of BCAAs + some additional awesomeness.

And let's not forget, whole milk has outperformed pretty much every supplement when it came to stimulating muscle growth.

The WMS, too, is overpriced junk. Go eat a cookie instead - same effect, improved ergo-genesis, and happier times all around.

For the specialization routine check this out (I'd hit the arms and shoulders, looks like you need some more "Bro" in your routine ) - Body Recomposition Forums

And on the worthlessness of WMS, I refer you to our local Nutrition Guru Alan Aragon -
Bodybuilding.com Forums - View Single Post - Waxy Maize Starch

He refers to proper pre-post W/O nutrition. You can find that info here:

Pre-workout meal timing?

You're way ahead of 97%+ of people out there - good work.

Although you might not feel it, there is a big difference. Although you do look lighter than 188lbs lol.

I also got up to 180lbs+ from somewhere near 135lbs too. I always though I'd look damn huge at 185lbs, well, I don't. I don't feel that much different either. Other people have noticed more of a difference than me haha.

Oh well, the only thing we can do is get to 200lbs, and see how we look then!

Oh, and also, I'd stick to NROL, it's a good program.

Jeez, that guy's arm is bigger than your head!

Trust me, you don't want to look like that guy. Why anyone would is beyond me.

Your progress so far is good. We're headed in opposite directions in terms of goals... I'm trying to get at or under 180 (same height as you). I'm actually there right now, but I do still have some body fat I want to drop.

You can probably drop about 90% of your supps... I agree with the other posters. I know it's hard to argue results, but training regularly and being 22 is a great combination. Your diet looks good though.

thanks, but i don't see why. at the end of the day we all just come home in our clothes and sit around waiting for the next day to come anyways. that doesn't require 6 visible abs.

that is the current mr. olympia (the title arnold won a bunch of times). one of the most muscular/if not the most muscular person on the planet. not really a great comparison LOL.

take every steroid known to man, 50iu insulin everyday stacked with every growth inducing peptide.. and odds are you still will look small next to him hah.

You look good to me. In the first picture, your abs show a little more, but you can tell its just because you were skinny. In the second, your muscles look much bigger; they just don't seem so defined becasue you have become more filled out. I think you look great. I'm a way bigger fan of the second pic. Congrats!

Default 5 WEEK UPDATE

Hope these pictures aren't too revealing or w/e, I don't care I just want feedback...does it look like i've almost lost muscle? might be hard to tell...

this is after 5 weeks on NROL's hypertrophy program. i've eaten 100% clean, high protein, quality rather high fats, upped carbs on leg days, moderate carbs on upper days, and only veggies for carbs on off days. kinda disappointed in the progress...

I should mention that when I started the program I was approx. 187 lbs, and now wake up around 177-178 lbs. Initially I lost a lot of weight, but I feel it was mostly water weight, because that quick loss stopped after the 2nd week.

My strength actually increased during this time that my weight decreased, from (most noticeably)...

3x15 for 125lbs, 125lbs, 95 lbs for ATG Front Squats
to
3x15 for 130lbs, 130lbs, 130lbs for ATG Front Squats

5x5 for 85,85,85,90,90 lb DB's for Incline DB Bench Press
to
5x5 for 90,90,90,95,95 lb DB's for Incline DB Bench Press

Most all the other lifts went up as well, but those I suppose were the most significant.
