Smile Looking for Advice.

Hello, I'm new to these forums, in fact I don't think I've ever signed up to any type of internet forum. Anway, I'm actually looking for advice towards attaining a Personal Training Cert. I'm currently a Kinesiology major in college with Human Performance as my option. I'm in my third year of college and a couple of years away from graduation but my eventual goal is to become a Physical Therapist. I've interned as a therapist aid for two years now and have done extensive tennis coaching so I'm pretty comfortable with fitness. I want to get cerified as a Personal Trainer in and pick up a part time job at a gym here in California as a way to grab some more experiance and have some better income (I'm tired of waiting on tables at restaurants haha) but I'm not too sure what certification to start with. I've done a little research and the material for the certification is pretty much on par with the courses I've taken in college. My question is where should I start and what certification would benefit me the most if I'm looking for a part time job as a college studen. Thanks for the help!

NASM or NSCA would probably be your best choice.

Also, you can take the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist test in your senior year. Once you graduate, they'll confer upon you the CSCS designation. Main advantage for doing it while in school is that the whole process is cheaper for students. Everything from your membership fees in the NSCA, to study materials, to the test. It might also help you in getting accepted into PT school.

I'd go with NSCA.... I'm not liking the selection of CECs/CEUs that NASM accepts as much as the NSCA's

See what the gyms were you want to work accept, for one thing. They should have a list.

Be aware that some commercial gyms don't accept the CSCS as a basic cert to train people. You might need a CPT for that, as the CSCS is considered advanced. Dumb? Maybe, but now no one can say how the CSCS guys get all the chicks.

You should also see how the big gyms feel about students as part-time employees - if that doesn't fit their employee and salary model for trainers it might be a non-starter.

woa, thanks for the awesome help everyone, I'm going to take a look into the NSCA and I'll look into the gym information. Also, thanks for the tip about asking about part time student employment!
