Default Children's fitness business

I'm a bit shocked at the lack of info on children's fitness. My local schools don't teach PE at all nor do they have recess. My kids and many others here need fitness but I've not seen anything in the fitness business that prepares personal trainers to open this kind of service.

I did find a couple of guys on youtube that address personal training and kids fitness:

But other than this and a book or two, I haven't come across anything else.

Any other resources or ideas for a fitness for kids business?

Look up stuff by Brian Grasso, who runs the International Youth Conditioning Association. Plenty of goodies there.

Also, Taiwan? I was there a few years ago on a study abroad trip. LOVE the place.

Dude...I echo Brian Grasso. The guy has been doing it from day 1. Surprised you never heard of him or the IYCA.

John,

LOL. Never underestimate people's ignorance and you won't be surprised.

Thanks for the tips about Grasso. I had heard his name but lost the links. Got them now.

Is anyone here doing this type of business? Has anyone heard anything about it?

I just got the first-level certification from the IYCA, but no actual doing business yet as I'm being very deliberate in getting everything set up just right so that when I do start training, everything else will take care of itself. The concepts not only make all the sense in the world for kids, but the vast majority of adults would benefit from this kind of training as well.

I'll have to look into the books and programs for children and fitness. A few things I've noticed just from visiting friends with small children for a week or two, doing my calisthenics routine while there, and then seeing photos of the kids doing handstands and push ups (it's been almost two years since I was there) because they want to be like their "uncle Kevin":

Kids are impressionable and if shown a great role model in physical fitness, can develop a great attitude of exercise and healthy living as a lifestyle at an early age.

Second, kids are playful. How many great, healthy movements do kids already do?-monkey bars, running, etc. Incorporate that into exercise. Make it fun. A little competition and goal setting (ie doing a few more push ups than last week or month) should be fun and positive reinforcement for youth.

An idea that I'm still working out in my head is to possibly try to secure grant funding to develop a program to combat childhood obesity in my area. Work with kids that are at risk for or already obese, and have their parents there to watch and participate with them to try to develop some good family exercise habits and keep them on track.

I agree, with obesity being one of the biggest issues facing children these day I feel that more attention would be given to it. The thing about child fitness is that you need to get the parents to buy in first. If you decide to launch a business targeting children, make sure that you devise a marketing strategy aimed at convincing the parents to sign their kids up.

No PE or recess? That's pretty sad. Thanks for some of the info on this thread, I am interested in working in fitness, primarily with children. I have a degree with an education focus (although my specialization was English as a second language). I'd love to get more into the physical education aspect. There is a chain of gyms in my area (Vancouver, BC) called Little Gym, it's a gym for kids. I haven't checked it out but it is an interesting start. I think Crossfit Kids is also a pretty neat idea.

Well, I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I've been complaining about my school's lackluster PE program for a while now, so I just got hired by E-stem to teach PE and Health. I have a week to build my curriculum! This is going to be fun!

Planning on logging any of it? I'd be all over that (reading, that is)
