Default Direct Mail Marketing

Hello,

I came to poll the audience on what types of marketing campaigns you guys run, or have considered running, and what you get the most success out of.

This subject confuses me also so I'd love to hear some responses. I know you can buy "lists" that specify if someone makes so much money, if they have bought fitness equipment or subscribed to fitness mags in the past, ect.

I have thought often of launching a direct mail campaign but would love to hear the details about getting lists ect. I've read some of Eric Ruths stuff on this but I still dont feel confident doing it. I'm all ears!

From what I understand about direct mail (from working for gyms in the past), is that most people throw stuff like that away. It takes numerous attempts, putting the same name/message in front of someone, before they finally acknowledge it. I wouldn't waste my money on direct mail. It seems impersonal in my opinion! Also, the flyers people send out are cheesy! Stock photos of women in spandex and such. lol! I think people are more prone to pay attention if it's something they don't have to read.

Bad direct mail isn't so good. Mostly it gets trashed. Targeted marketing, using variable content can work. The more targeted and the more variable it is (customized to each particular customer) the better it works. But it takes special software and good database skills, so you pay for it.

As them what your ROI will be, the response rate projected, etc. If they are really good, they will suggest things to improve response rates. Every piece you mail out that gets trashed is wasted money, so you want the best chance of someone opening it and responding.

There are certain assumptions people can make regarding income levels from public records. I don't know if it still happens, but when we got married, had a kid, bought a house, moved apts, etc. we got mail targeted at us based on those things. You can used those things to get their attention OR target a program or sale dependent on those things (lose that pregnancy weight, etc.)

If it looks targeted to me (e.g. my name) I trash it all if I have never heard of you or your product or your service because I will not reward you for buying my name off a list.

Since the OP is named Adbox and has a link in the sig to presumeably a product or service - I'm wondering if this is geniune interest, a marketing ploy or getting the people here to contribute free market research for his/her product.

my thoughts exactly, Lisa. The other posts throw it a bit.

Hell, I've only ever once responded to a mail I got and didn't ask for. I'd be THRILLED if people would stop sending me shit I have to find a way to dispose of in an environmentally safe way.

you can also buy lists of people who respond to targeted marketing campaigns

Regardless of the intent of the thread starter (who I give the benefit of the doubt to judging by his/her activity in other threads), I appreciate everyone's input and hope this thread keeps lighting up.

Me personally - no experience yet. I'm 3 weeks away from starting a direct mail campaign to promote my group fitness classes. For the most part, the cost is pretty low per person depending on the piece you're sending out. For the pieces I'll be sending out it will roughly be a dollar per piece. Sure most people throw them away, but I'm hoping for a 1 percent response rate. Sounds crappy on paper, but with that response rate I break even within the first month of the client signing up for the program. Time will tell.
