Default new gym layout

please comment on things i need to add/remove/move

still a work in progress of course

not for a traditional member gym, but for a personal training studio, so only people working out will be getting trained, and I am the only trainer.

as for as equipment goes, its only bare bones really, but I can always add on in the future, and I am a heavy believer in free weights over machines.

dumbbells are a concern right now. getting db's from 5-100 is really expensive as well as the racks for them, so for right now I will have the adjustible kind.

thanks!

What kind of comments are you wanting?

It lacks feng shui because the scale should be along the east wall and facing northwest. Is that what you're looking for?

Seriously, it appears there is plenty of floor space for plyos and other non-externally loaded work. You could get some powerblock adjustable DBs. They go from 5-130lbs/hand and cost < 1/5th of the cost of the entire individual DB collection and take up a single 1'x1'x3' area when in storage. Then a pair of platemates handle that little gap when going from x0 to x5.

PowerBlock - Blocks

maybe not neccesarily about the lay out, about the equipment selection as well

One last thing, see 95% of physical therapists and CSCSs recommend NO LEG EXTENSIONS due to the shear forces placed on the ligaments of the knee.

are the bars stored on/near the plate tree?

do you have to walk over the mat to get to the medicine balls?

do you have to change clothes in the bathroom? Is there enough room? Is there something to sit on that isn't the toilet? Is it handicapped accessible? Does it need to be?

Are there cubbies/lockers for me to put my purse & regular clothes - even hang them? Is this a cold climate where you need a place for coats and such?

does the bench go in the cage? can you only bench in the cage then? if you pull the bench out - where will it go ?

where's the fire extinguisher? First Aid kit?

don't you need an office - or at least a desk/phone/computer?

Great questions, Lisa

Agree with Cynic... Scrap the leg ext/curl.

Move your stretch mats (#5) to the NE corner of the picture, and put in a carpet track for sled drag/band sprints/tire flip/whatever. Since you only have 40' (30 useful feet), then put crash pads on the walls on either side. Do at least two lanes.

I agree on the powerblock thing if you're short on space or money. Put what you save into K-bells.

You definitely ought to get some cubby space for your clients to change and leave their clothes. Even if you only have one bathroom, you are actually going to HAVE to be ADA compliant.

Good luck!

I was wondering the same thing. I was guessing one of those things on the outside on the south of the drawing was the door.

Still don't need it. If you just bought it, get your money back. Put that money into the cost of laying down a track. Go get a sled! Or some sandbags.

really dont think a leg curl ,machine is neccesary?, i will use ghr's, rdl's, good mornings etc.. but leg curl seemed important

yeah thats why i tried to keep a big area of space open. i also will have space outside to do gpp work and other stuff liek that
I agree on the powerblock thing if you're short on space or money. Put what you save into K-bells.
def. lookin into powerblocks. might decide to go with traditional db's. still not sure

My final bit on this...

a bike and treadmill are good cardio tools, but if you can, add a rower. Rowers are some of the best, overall conditioning cardio workouts you can find.

Also, if you can find the space, a cable cross or cross over is a good thing to have. It's a bit specialized, but it's such a wonderful tool. If I'm able to get a house or condo this year, I'm going to try to hold back some money for a rack and cable cross.

Good catch, Cynic. I thought that #9 was a crossover. Well, whatever you intended for that space, do a crossover. Matrix makes a decent "functional trainer", Vortex has a good one, Keiser as a good one, and my personal fave, Freemotion's dual stack crossover.
