Default New edition of the CSCS textbook!

To be released in June, 2008:

Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning - 3rd Edition

Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning-3rd Edition - Human Kinetics

I suppose that this means that a new version of the exam is also being prepared; this information might be relevant to people planning to earn the CSCS certification this year.

Thanks for the insight. I plan on my CSCS, right after my ACSM-PT.

If you start your studies before June, will you be grandfathered in for the exams (based on the 2nd ed), or will you have to revisit some material midstream?

Sorta on topic...but I intend on becoming a S&C coach or personal trainer. I will be applying for graduate schools in the next year or so (in kinesiology or exsci) and was wondering if I should try to get my CSCS before grad school or afterwards? I may want to do a little personal training prior to grad school, but I could probably get any old cert for that, eh?

Does anybody actually know what the difference between Edition 2 and Edition 3. I have edition 2 and will probably be taking the test after the July deadline. I'm just wondering if there are major differences or just subtle one. Thanks

I'm not a 100% certain, but I believe some grad, and even ungrad schools prepare you and arrange for the CSCS exam as part of the cirriculum. You may want to check over the schools you are applying to.

For those of you (like me) wondering about when the CSCS exam will change due to the new textbook (now said to be coming out in July 2008), I just got an email from the NSCA saying the changes will not go into effect until July 2009:

Quote:
Yes, the exam will be updated to reflect the newest edition of the primary exam preparation textbook BUT not until July, 2009. The policy that the Certification Commission follows is to wait 1 year after a new or updated exam preparation resource becomes available before the new or updated content is source information for exam questions.
So, you/I can focus on the second edition until next summer; of course, the third edition does update some information:

Quote:
The third edition of the “Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning” textbook is scheduled to be released at the NSCA National Conference in July of this year. Here is a description of how it will be changed from the second edition:

*Restructured information about the body’s adaptations to anaerobic and aerobic exercise training
*Greatly expanded information about performance-enhancing substances
*Up-to-date nutritional information, including the new food guide pyramid and recent research-based nutritional guidelines
*Additional sport-specific testing protocols and comprehensive normative and descriptive data charts
*New photographs of exercise techniques AND more exercises
*New terminology for concepts related to the design of resistance training programs and periodization
*Concise explanations of speed and agility training guidelines
*Step-by-step guidelines on designing aerobic endurance training programs
*Revised descriptions of strength and conditioning staff duties and checklists for facility maintenance
Voila.

x2

I was just going over my wish list and seen the $50 price tag. That's a pretty big price drop.

Hopefully something significant. It's been eight years since the second edition came out. Looking over the table of contents, it at least looks better organized. The second edition's content order confuses me at times.

I'll wait and see if I can get a used on in a few months. I'm up to my eyeballs in books I haven't had a chance to read yet anyway.

I pre-ordered this a few weeks back. I wish I didn't know about it until a week after it came out because I hate waiting for books like this. It's like Christmas morning or something, even though there may not be much new info. There should be though, considering the last edition was quite a while back and it itself was a good update from the 1st edition.
