Default I need ideas...

I am brand new here and I just wanted to post a question for you all. I am scheduled to take my NSCA-CPT test this Tuesday. I am trying to decide where and how I would like to work once I'm certified. I am a mother of two so I am not looking for a full time job. I would love to do some sort of online training, where I would do the program design and then there would be weekly check in's etc. Because that I could do from the comfort of my home while my kids are napping. I would be willing to leave the house but not everyday. Probobly not more than 2-3 days a week. The trainers at the commercial gyms here are a joke and I'd rather steer clear of working for them, if I can.

Here are some ideas I've thought of: some spas employ trainers to do program design for their clients, there are a few smaller gyms in the area I could contact as well as some big corporations/businesses that have gyms at their work place. Can you help me think of any other ideas I could look into?

Also, how do you all feel about online personal training? What would be the best way to spread the word?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

I would hold off on the online thing for a while. I've been doing it for a while and the money is just not there yet, unless you're a name.

I understand your resistance to doing the gym thing. If I didn't own one I'd be the same way. I would create a niche for yourself in your community doing bootcamps. They are very popular right now, they work (clients will get results and tell everyone they know where they got them), they're fun, they're cheaper for the client and short term so they're easier to sell, and they pay a LOT better per hour so you can just do three groups--9 hours per week at $120 a session ain't bad money.

That's a great idea. Thanks JP! Do I just make it up? Or is there protocol for doing a boot camp? Also, where would I do it? Would I need a home gym or have to work with a gym?

I want to pre-empt this with saying my intention is not to be negative merely to inform.

I think you need to re-think what training means to you. It seems like to me that you are looking for the easiest way to work possible or more so how to make the most money do as little as possible and being away from your kids as little as possible. While there is nothing wrong with that at all I personally don't think you should start doing bootcamp just yet. It is too easy to be hurt, you have to understand about the proper insurance and quite frankly you really should have some prior training experience in my opinion.

Online training is even harder to do the right way and really you lose more money from time than make it if you add all all the time you spend emailing alone.

As much as you may not like it I think everyone for at least a few months should work either under someone they admire or in a gym atmosphere to get the feel of what working with clients is all about. Put up some flyers for free training so you can just get your hands dirty and understand what you are good at, what you aren't. Where you can excel better, etc.

Before you start to train and understand people you have to understand where your strengths and weakness lie. Doing this will allow you to know other things.

For example, maybe you have a niche for working with housewives, so your bootcamp that you run later on should be devoted to house wives.

Maybe you don't work well with bulk equipment and you have a knack for creative bodyweight movement. So have your bootcamp training be partner on partner training. Things like this.

Take the time to respect this as a craft that you need to educate on training and ALSO not to waste any of your own time trying things the wrong way. A quick buck is all it is really coming off of right now, not saying that is what it is, just saying the lack of experiance is showing through just with the typing here, imagine how it might show to people who put their bodies in your hands.

Thank you for your honest feedback. Since i responded before I also decided I would not do boot camps for a while. I don't claim to have any experience as I am just now getting certified and have never "officially" trained anyone. I've only helped friends with program design and spotting. I will definately take your ideas to heart. thanks!
