Default new to all this :)

Hi, everyone!

I have been thinking alot lately about getting certified, and basically decided I will be doing the NASM-CPT program. I do have a few questions if you could please answer them for me. First, I was curious to see which gym/health club chain would you recommend I start out with when I get certified. I figured Bally's would be good but I am skeptical because of the fact that they are hiring at EVERY location in my state, seems to me they have way too high of a turn over. I could be wrong, but thats the vibe I am getting from them. Are there any that are better over another? Also, as far as pay goes, I would rather (I know it sounds stupid) make less money but not have to be stressed with quotas and awful management then to make more and wonder if my job is on the line. I eventually want to finish my degree in Nutrition and go private for both personal training and/or nutrition consultations but that will not be for yrs down the road. For now, which is the best route to go as far as working for someone else? Thanks so much! Sorry my post is so long.

Okay, that's good. Sounds like you have lots of other options.

down the shore (dts)!

Stef:

As for where to start it really depends. Like the other said I wouldn't suggest Ballys. I've known people who have worked there and they did not like it at all...I don't remember the exact complaints, but it was mostly about the environment. The calibur of trainer at most Ballys is usually subpar. I had a friend who was offered a job because he 'looked the role' but didn't really know a lick about lifting...to this day he hasn't worked his legs.

NYSC/PSC (Town Sports) is another option that you have, but from what I've heard is their career development is pretty much non-existent. Some of their trainers are not cert'd (shh) and any courses or continuing ed is pretty much on your own...There is no educational aspect to it.

I would mention Equinox, but there aren't any DTS...The problem is that if you're looking into a big commercial gym, that's what you're going to get. Managers who are more concerned about hitting their monthly/quarterly bonuses than they are about you being a good trainer... Which is all well and good, but if you stumble a month or two, watch out.

What I would suggest is taking a look at first what is available in your area. craigslist is a great place to start, followed by the local sunday paper. Submit your resume and cover letter to a whole bunch of places...you'll hear back from them within a week usually. Most places will set up an interview, and if you ask will allow you to come in a few days before for a free workout so you can see the gym, talk to members/trainers, etc. This will give you a chance to see if you'd fit in and really like it there.

Hope this helps, if you have more specific/personal questions, feel free to pm me.

By the way, welcome to the board!

Thanks Keith and everyone for helping me. I really appreciate it See, my concern about starting out is that I want to be able to learn as much as possible and be around great trainers that will help me to gain more experience. I would rather have a longer commute or pay cut for a place that I can learn how to do everything the right way and be able to enjoy my job. As far as the private gyms go, do they all have some sort of quota? I am ready to work hard and really want to do this, but if it turns out to be a high stress environment, I'll eventually burn out

If you're looking to be around really top notch trainers and learn as much as possible, my general feeling is to stay away from big commercial gyms...IMHO

As for private gyms go, JP can tell you more about what they expect, but here's my understanding. You should have:

1. A certification, or be scheduled to take a cert. within 3-6 months depending on the gym.

2. Show signs of professionalism.

3. Have a PASSION for fitness.

You can take a look at some of my posts about looking for a training job:

Also an interview from my blog with John Izzo about interviewing:
