Default Inquiring minds want to know . .

Lemme see if I can phrase this question correctly:

My best friend and I have bodies that approach weight loss very differently and I am curious as to if there is a scientific reason why. We are keeping a fitday log together, weighing each morning, etc, so I have noticed some of the differences more.

Her body changes weight every day. It's up a pound, down a pound, up a half, down a half, up .3, down .3. Just constant variations on the scale. She can gain 5 lbs in a week, and then slowly lose it the next.

My body does not fluctuate much at all. I am the same weight like 4 mornings in a row, then it will go down (by like 2 pounds) one day, go back up for 3 days, then settle back down into the original 'low number'. Then that cycle will start over again with the new number. My scale weight rarely goes down by a single pound, usually it's at least a pound and a half. Sometimes this cycle is much more extended, I may go ten days seeing the same number every morning.

The question is: Is there a reason that our bodies have such different weigh in patterns? Does that indicate something as far a metabolism goes?

random side notes:

~we both have good scales, and the patterns are still this way when we are using other scales.

~she is 27, I am 32, so similar ages

~our weights are very similar (within ten pounds) of each other, although she is much more in shape than I am, and about 8 inches taller so her weight is much more healthy for her body.

~She is about 5 pounds above her ideal weight range, and I am probably about 30 pounds above mine.

~Neither of us have any other medical conditions, like diabetes that would effect this.

I would guess it has a lot to do with how one retains fluids.

Has she lost a lot of fat? Those of us who have can fill those now empty fat cells with fluid pretty fast. Lose it fast, too. Going from low carb and low sodium to higher carb and higher sodium can leave me 7-8 lbs heavier in just a day or so.

Or maybe she fluctuates her carb intake more than you do? On a carb cycling plan you're having way more water weight fluctuations than on a steady-carb - diet plan

Yeah, I figured that would be the most likely suspect.

No, she has never been overweight. In fact, she has battled several eating disorders and has worked out a LOT, in her life. She has also ran a few marathons, and that type of thing.

No, her eating is WAY healthier than mine. She does fairly low carb naturally. Weighs all her food. Eats at least one big salad a day, etc. I am sure I consume a lot more carbs than she does.

She also takes a handful of various vitamins and minerals a day.

Anyhooo, I guess it just has always struck me odd because I know between the two of us, I definitely eat the less healthy and don't follow the 'rules' like she does, but she is the one that has all the fluctuations.

Thanks for the food for thought y'all

most likely I'd say it's variations in carb/sodium/water intake. She has more fluctuation than you.

Either that or it's pooping variation.

This is very interesting. At what point are you at "a lot of fat" ?

I'll agree with most comments on the topic though, probably just fluid retention.

I don't know. It's like knowing what's obscene or what's a hanging chad. You know it when you see it. You feel it in your soul.

I don't know. I was fat most of my life, and now I'm not. My weight fluctuates in huge numbers when I cycle carbs, salty snacks, alcohol, etc.

There's no dividing line, it's just the more fat cells you have, the more fluctuations you might have.

This is just a guess on my part, btw. I've noticed that my friends who've lost more fat fluctuate more than those who've lost less or none at all.

My weight fluctuates the same way...some days I can be up or down by as much as two pounds from the previous day. For me, sodium, carbs, and beer, especially "Light" beer are the culprits. Light beer seems to be loaded with sodium...I'll stick with high-test.

Health issues play a big part in water retention also. My biggest water weight gain in a day was 8 lbs due to perimenopause and thyroid problems.
