Default Response to freezing

Just out of curiosity...How does your system manage cold/ freezing to keep you warm? Does your rmr increase?

You burn slightly more calories to keep warm. I don't know if it's worth purposely being cold, though. The "drinking ice water" studies seemed pretty insignificant.

But also it's worth mentioning that you also 'slow' down when you are cold. Your body tightens up to keep you all together and warm and therefore you lose the benefit of the calories you might burn with incidental movement.

I am here to say I managed to get plenty fat and live in a pretty cold climate.
