Default Funny nonsense in the media...

Just thought I'd make a thread of stupid stuff people read in magazines and online. Here's a real winner I read today:

"Research shows... Drinking caffeine with a carb-rich food postworkout can help refuel muscles. On days off, you have time to be leisurely after sweating, so swing by a café and order a muffin and a latte."

-- source Cosmo magazine, July 2009

Wow. I guess I'll hit Starbucks on Saturday then.

Ive never seen anything in the research that caffeine stimulates glycogen resynthesis. I'd ask Cosmo for a study to back up that claim

How about this one -"saturated fat lowers testosterone". I saw this in "Muscle and Performance" Magazine. many websites also say stuff like this this but Ive been researching it and only find that "low fat diets" lower testosterone. The research doesn't say ANYTHING about low saturated fat diets.
Hopefully nobody bought into that myth..

How about this as a "nutrition advice" posted around the dorms at the University of Texas:

"- eat three grams of carbs per pound of body weight immediately after a workout.

-exercising at low intensity is the best way to burn fat. lifting weights, sprinting, etc is useful for fitness, but will not have an effect on body fat levels.

-when hungry during classes, snack on...
-trail mix
-dry cereal
-granola bars
-sports bars
-graham crackers
-bagels
-juice
-fig bars
-sports gels
-gatorade or other sports drinks

-avoid foods with excess fat in them, like peanut butter, nuts, oils, and dressings. stick to healthier options like fruit, bread products, and energy bars."

It's just about the worst advice I've ever seen.

it affects insulin sensitivity

whether that has bearing on glucose uptake I have no idea cause I'm too lazy to look, but given mainstream science reporting it's about 50:50

Sounds like they haven't taken down the posters since the 80's.

I feel bad that there are so many students who are going to read that. When you see things like this, it's no wonder the country is huge. Well, not that that's an excuse, but you know what I mean
