Lightbulb What do you do when your HUNGRY??

Whenever I start training really intensely or when I go to spin classes my body has a breakdown and I turn into a hungry bear. I just want to eat everything in sight.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks??

I eat something, have a cup of tea, or go to bed.

1) Proper pre- and post-workout nutrition
2) Fluids
3) Celery
4) Stop whining and deal with it

1) Don't let yourself get hungry before your workout: have a small (under 25 Calories, snack right before you workout)

2) Drink more fluids
* before you eat anything drink at least 1L of water (~34oz)
* drink a large cup of tea (0.5L - 16oz): green and mint both stimulants and have mild appetite suppressing properties, but are mild enough not to do much to you. When cutting I don't eat after 8pm but if I have any urges to eat I have another cup of tea.

3) Post workout, eat a limited amount of moderate-fiber low-calorie foods
* pickles (dill not sweet) 18-25Kcal per 100grams (3.5 ounces)
* radishes
* fresh spicy peppers (Jalapenos) these are not low calorie per weight, but you generally won't eat very many of them, and if you do, switch up to habaneros.
* celery stalk (my problem with celery is it has so little flavour it barely feels like you are eating anything)

Personally I find if I do heavily engage my aerobic system I do not have this problem. If I maintain (or average) 70+% of your HRR (Heart Rate Reserve) for over an hour, generally my body heats up enough to kill appetite.

Are you in fat loss mode? This is precisely why I scale back on workout intensity when dieting. Too much hunger makes it waay too easy to blow your deficit.

Like mentioned above, proper pre/post workout eating does seem to help and lots of veggies too (especially raw seem to help fill me up) But hard workouts when dieting often leave me too hungry and even filling up on the low cal stuff can break the deficit.

If you've tried all the above and still want to eat and can't, brushing your teeth is a good trick. It sorta tricks your body into thinking eating is over for the day.

25 calories? That would be like a bite of food! Did you mean 250?

If I need a night time snack and I'm starving, I make a big cucumber/tomato salad.

I cut up a whole cucumber and tomato, and put a tblsp of real mayo, salt and pepper, and mix it all up. (you can add ranch salad dressing seasoning if you want)

It makes a really big bowl, and is so tasty and crunchy. And it takes a while to eat.

I love it. Need some right now!

I do literally mean 25 calories.

Just a bite of food to take the edge off hunger, to reduce the stomach acid. I assume you are attempting to attain a calorie deficit. A one hour intense workout is likely to burn 500 calories or less (depends on bodyweight). That is 400 in excess of just living, as such if you are attempting to cut, it doesn't give you a lot of room for extra calories.

25 calories of the foods I describe:

6 dill pickle spears
17 large radishes
6 Raw Jalapenos
2.5 large stalks of celery (25 celery sticks)

in addition:

7 Grapes (fresh)
1 medium tomato
1 medium carrot

I heartily concur. Sometimes if "sweet" is being craved.... a big honkin' carrot.

I like 1/2c of frozen blueberries. The frozen part makes it seem a little sweeter.

I usually just eat when I'm hungry. I've found that I can be hungry ALL DAY if I didn't eat much the day before.
