hi, i just need someone to articulate for me what is going on with my body. i had a baby in october 2008 and in december i started doing a body pump class 3 times a week plus cardio about 3 times a week. I never did any sort of strength training in my entire life. initially, i didn't cut my calories and i saw the scale go up a bit. in january, i cut calories but never saw the scale move. february had me with such a voracious appetite that i just knew i was gonna either gain or break even....well, the scale went down a little (approx. 5 pounds). Yesterday, I SURPRISINGLY was able to fit into my pre-baby jeans....and quite easily.
I am about 20 pounds heavier than i was before i got pregnant but now i can fit into the same jeans....HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? Does that mean I lost the fat and put on 20 pounds of muscle? I am so confused...
It probably means that your body has just changed around a bit. It happens, especially since you've just had a baby. The weight has probably just redistributed a little differently. hey--don't knock it...at least you're a smaller size. I'm heavier right now than I have been in either of my two previous pregnancies and I'm wearing a smaller size clothes than I did then, too.

Your body keeps an accurate journal regardless of what you write down...
You can lose inches without seeing much change on the scale (body recomposition) but usually that would mean you could wear a size you wore when maybe 5 or so lbs less. NOT 20???
I'm sure you added a little bit of muscle, but no where near 20 pounds! Trust me it takes years and years and years of knowledgeable training for a woman to put on that much muscle (naturally anyway). Are you using a different scale? Weighing yourself different times of the day? A womans weight fluctuates 5 pounds are so during the day and at certain times of the month. But hey, the clothes don't lie! If you're fitting into your pre-pregnancy clothes and feeling good, awesome!!

I would agree with Sinead ... it is likely that your fat is redistributed in places you didn't carry it before and might not be as visible to you now. Hormones play a significant role as to WHERE our (women) fat is stored. Lots of hormone stuff going on around and after pregnancy.

There's several factors that can go into it. Recomping to some degree isn't out of the question though it's not going to account for 20 lbs of LBM gain.
