I know it's strange but for the last few months I feel like I look thinner during my cycle...what's up with that. I'm sure it's hormonal but what does it mean? What should I do? Last week was my first week after my period and I started feeling a little more squishy, especially in the belly. I keep thinking I'm dreaming but, like I said, it's been like this for several months. Anyone have any ideas? I'm wondering if it's perimenopause symptoms???
I've got weight data running back as far as 5 years ago, linked to the cycle and it seems that weight wise, I'm at my lowest point around the 10th day of a cycle.
The reason for this is 2-fold. Progesterone will make you bloat and most women eat more in that part of the cycle anyway, since estrogen can suppress appetite pretty well.
Body fat numbers will be the lowest around that time too, but that's mostly as a function of different conductivity. It's why I'm always stressing the importance of using at least 14d averages for bf% measurements in case of using BIA devices.
Espi, I'm not sure I get your point. I am talking about during the days I bleed (sorry for the graphics) I am thinner. So that's day 1-7. Then after that it's about two weeks of bloating back up. If I have my hormone understanding correct, while bleeding your hormones are at near zero then start picking back up. So I wonder still if this is normal or not. Especially since newdawn just started noticing it too. Is it age related and is there anything that will prevent the drastic swing?
Generally, there's a bit of whoosh at about the 3rd day of the cycle, so if you mean this, then it's the same. But the weight will bottom out around the 10th day of a cycle, upon which it stabilizes and then suddenly goes up again just before ovulation happens (which is NOT the 14th day for 99% of women).
It just varies. A lot can do with release of constipation alone through various cycle times, water, etc.
I have tried to study the effects of different water retentions at different times and if they lead to different results but thus far I have seen no connection through my own clients or research.
So I guess the bottom line here is suck it up and be aware of it; I should be conscious and stay away from sodium and up my water during these weeks then.

Try not to avoid sodium unless you know you have issues with sodium specifically. Balance is what you want. Up water, up potassium if need, but not necessarily lower sodium.
Thanks Leigh! You know, that kind of does make sense. I stayed away from sodium before finding you and now realize I had ALOT of problems because of that. Seems to me avoidance makes you hypersensitive to it when you do consume it.
Yeah you know it is a shame it is used as such a trick for weight loss. If you want to optimize energy, sleep, and training the best you can during fat loss, a big key of that is electrolyte balance and sodium is a huge role in that.
