today is my first day wearing the Gowear and I also have the display. I charged it overnight and this AM when I put it on, my calorie expenditure was already like 300 something, is it saying that's approx how much I had burned since midnight?

one more question, when I did my spin bike today the calorie burn was really low, is this b/c you don't use your arms as much cycling? I was really disappointed. Any thoughts? Thanks

What is low? I know when I wore my Bugg for a one hour spin class I was around 350 calories. That is high for me.

I can't remember exactly, but I did intervals for 15 min and then 15 min steady and it was only like 60-70cals. my intervals were very hard and it didn't register for vigorous activity at all.
I was also checking the steps just to see and after about 3 min it said only like 20 steps. I am still sort of skeptical about how accurate this can be.

I find that on non-arm exercises (like bike or stairmaster, especially if you hold on) it won't register as high. Personally, I'd rather be conservative in my estimate anyway... but yes, the tech I spoke to when I had a Bugg last summer agreed that it might underestimate spinning and other things where your arms don't really move.

so do you all figure your deficit from your total from the Gowear, or do you use the activity calculator from Leigh, or go from a # in between the two.
and would you say these devices read high or low for your daily caloric burn?

Default Still don't have my Gofit

Does anyone know if the online membership starts from date of purchase or when the armband is first downloaded? I'm asking because my Gofit is STILL waiting to be delivered. (My hubby actually talked to fedex on Friday and they are still backlogged from the Washington weather. They're hoping to be caught up next week.) Anyway he did purchase it Dec 10th or thereabouts so if it starts on the purchase date I'll have to see about getting some time credited to the account. If it starts when you set up the online stuff then everything will be fine. Other than I don't have it yet.

I also would be curious to hear how others are planning on using the information.

I know with the Bugg it's not until you activate it ... since they are the same company, I would assume the Gowear is the same.

Bummer on having to wait so long!!!

diana, I am using the information to attempt a 500 calorie deficit on average for the next 8 weeks. I log all of my food in thedailyplate. the device measures a 24 hour "day" from midnight to midnight. so when I wake up in the morning, I upload the armband and then I look at yesterdays calories and compare them to what I ate yesterday. I am getting better at predicting what I might be burning by dinnertime or so. so I might have a larger or smaller bedtime snack depending on what my activity has been that day. so far this device has been VERY helpful. I am down to the lowest scale weight that I have been in 20 years! fixing to go lower too! and caliper testing shows most of it is fat, so all good.

I am curious to hear how everyone is sleeping. I am shocked at how many times the GoWear Fit says I wake during the night. I never felt I was a good sleeper and this is confirming it. However, I don't know what "normal" is for the average person. Do most of you sleep all night?

My sleep is horrible. I am there - in the bed and not sleeping. I am going to wear this thing for a couple of days straight to look at the numbers again, but I was shocked to say the least.

My sleep as of 2 years ago was fine. The past 2 years I find if I stay up til my usual 2am, I often spend 3 hours not falling asleep. If I go to bed at 12:30am or 1am I seem to sleep fine.

I never used to get up to pee, but now I do once a night maybe 1/2 the week.

I thought my sleep issues were from age.
I occasionally have been taking 1/2 ambien, maybe once or twice a month.

I read about melatonin but didn't know the dose and didn't try it.

Hi

I still havent bought this yet, I had too many expenses over the holidays. But I am wanting to buy something in the next month or so.

I also saw this http://www.actitrainer.com/, and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it? It sounds very similiar to the go fit (it also measures sleep, which I am so interested in), but it looks like this one DOES come with an arm band, and you can also enter in your daily meals.

Has anyone used it, or heard anything about it (positive or negative?)

I still am leaning towards the gofit, but I was just curious about this actitrainer, for I just recently heard about it, and wanted to know if any of you heard of it?

Thank you!

I had to come back to this. I am seriously shocked at the lack of sleep I am getting. Shocked, I tell you. I mean, I know I wake up various times through the night - but that is affecting my sleep more than I ever thought! I am a melatonin taker and can't even imagine what my sleep time would look like without that. I am hoping the numbers look better after I wear it this entire week.

Also, I wish this would have come with a better manual to use. I am not a tekkie and I have questions about it, but don't want to appear like the dumbass I am.

How much melatonin do you take each night?
Does it help you fall asleep?

Melatonin works great for me. I've taken 3mg and usually fall asleep within 15 minutes. I think it was the Natures Way -- whatever brand comes in the purple bottle. The now have a time release one and I don't like that one very much. It takes me longer to fall asleep and if I do wake up in the middle of the night, I tend to be groggy the next day.

The one I like the best is MidNite. If I did wake up in the middle of the night, I would easily fall back to sleep and not wake up groggy

Well, I'm glad I'm not alone on this. I started taking Melatonin about 3 months ago and I felt like it made a huge difference. However, I've been wearing my GoWear since Christmas and I'm awake 5, 6, 7 times during the night some nights. How are we supposed to build muscle and improve performance if we don't get a good night's sleep?

I take 3 mg. Nature's Bounty brand. I think I bought it at Giant Eagle or Walmart - about $8 for 120 tabs. In other words, cheap.

I never had trouble falling asleep just staying asleep. I started taking Melatonin from a recommendation here on the forum. Not only has it helped me stay asleep, I fall asleep in about 5 minutes usually! Also, no grogginess in the am.

I've been anxious for the holidays to be over so that the kids will be back in school and we can get back on a regular schedule. I know I've been staying up too late during the break. Last night was finally a normal bed time and this morning a normal wake up time. I checked my GoWear and I only woke up ONCE and that was to pee (which is the norm since I started the gallon/water/day). I am hopeful that with the regular routine, my sleep will improve.

I agree. Fellow dumb ass here! I especiallly need help with the reports. Also, I get an error almost everytime I launch the activity manager even though I tried re-downloading the software and almost everytime I click on log health measures, it takes me back to the home page. Very frustrating!

I take 1 mg of time release melatonin each night about 1 hour before bedtime ... helps me fall asleep and stay asleep.

Can you all explain this sleep feature of the Gowear? How do you know you've been waking up?

is melatonin addicitve in any way? do those of you using it plan to continue using it indefinitely ? I ask because I went through a few years trying prescrition drugs for insomnia and not only did they not work but it was horrible weaning myself of them, but I am interested in melatonin.

What was weird to me was that on a night I thought I slept well, the gowear said I hadn't. And then on a night I thought I tossed and turned, it said I had good sleep

I don't wear it every night cuz I think my skin likes it better with a break from the sensors...

I take the same dosage of melatonin, as Julie. It isn't supposed to be habit forming (this coming from a former Tylenol PM junkie) and I also wake up feeling pretty good.
I don't have too much trouble getting to sleep. But, my husband works nights and usually is getting into bed around 3:00 or so, I wake up. He is such a snorer - really bad - I actually just talked to him about this over Christmas break, because it seems to be getting worse.
There are literally nights where it says I am laying down for 9 hours and only sleeping for less than 6 hours! That is a whole lot of, I don't know what!!

Julie - I don't know how it does it to be honest, but when you upload your info - it makes a graph with times and calorie burns and you can see and know that you were in bed - but there is activity going on. Not as high as when you know you might have gotten up to use the restroom.
It's weird. I am totally baffled, but it explains a lot.

I said I would post some of my comparisons with my Polar F11, so this is what I put in my log. It's a little depressing, but VERY eye-opening and I needed this.

Ok. Here are a couple of number examples for the differences in the numbers. I definitely don't have the caloric burn going on that was relayed to me during my testing (VO2, RMR and something else?) back in May, but I do understand that I was a good 15 lbs heavier then, too and I know that could maybe affect the numbers. I love my Polar, love it. However, it is reading a much higher burn for me. I know it is based strictly on HR, so I don't know what to think. But, remember a loooong time ago when Anne put all my numbers together and asked me if I was losing as consistently as those numbers would have said? I do. I think this is why. I wasn't creating the deficit I thought I was. One step closer, a little more information on this journey.
Besides not sleeping for shit, here is a little breakdown - just for a couple of days.
I did go in and reprogram my Polar to meet my current weight this past weekend. I went in to my GWFit data and moved the time to reflect when I put my Polar on for the day and took it off.
Yesterday 1/5/2009
Polar 2532 calories
GWFit 1951 calories
That is the difference of over 300 calories, which may not mean a lot to some people - but it does affect me right now.

Today 1/6/2009
Before the gym
Polar 1364
GWFit 961

I reset my Polar and went to work out
After the gym
Polar 1118
GWFit (with the number above added in) 1648 for the entire day.
Again, that is a difference around 800 calories
Again, I used the same exact time periods for both devices.
I will continue to use my Polar as a HRM. It does a good job. This just explains a lot to me. I have been stuck a little with the weight loss and this explains it. It is now time to get down and dirty with the weightloss.
I don't know how it plays in, if I try to sleep in the Polar and the GWF. But basing it on what these numbers are telling me, it would still read higher than what I am actually burning.

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here...came across the thread while trying to comparison shop the GWF and the BBv3 and I have to say your posts have been extremely helpful. I know much earlier someone said the best thing about the GWF was the new smaller size in comparison to the BBv2 which was too big for them. Now that the new BB is out, and is the same size as the GWF, would anyone change their recommendation at all? Basically I'm trying to figure out if the extra $50 up front is worth the additional nutrition tracking online? (The GWF is $200 for the monitor/display watch/3 months, the BBv3 is $250 for the monitor/display watch/6 months) I am a mom of 2 young children who used to be very athletic and lean, but lately is having a hell of a time trying to lose weight. I'm looking for something that gives me an accurate picture of my health and makes me accountable for my food intake as well as my physical activity (or lack thereof). Thanks so much!
