Default Calorie Deficit?

Quick question,

I just got my gowear and i haven't put in my 3 day food intake and i put my calorie intake at 1800. I burned around 2600 calories and i noticed that i had a thing called calorie balance and then it say Calorie deficit 1070???

shouldn't my calorie deficit be 800 since that is what i have burned over my 1800 goal instead of 1070???

I have one, too, and love it! as for the calorie deficit number- check out the times on your report. you may have it set for 5 am to 11 pm for example and the total deficit may be for a 24 hour period. i noticed that the calorie burned numbers are different due to the times that it's measuring the burn on my charts (and you can adjust them by the way). i love the Go Wear - it really helps me pay attention to my NEAT and to my sleep (or lack of). It does know when I'm sleeping vs laying down and even when I am awake in the night.

This works really well when you use a program to monitor food intake (Daily Plate or whatever) in conjunction with the calorie burn.

I have found, however, that when I'm exercising in the gym with the Go Wear on AND a heart rate monitor, the calorie burn between the two is different. My heart rate monitor says I burn more than the Go Wear Fit does... just fyi. If any of you have any thoughts on why that is, please share!

Many HRM are woefully inaccurate at estimating caloric expenditure. Better to take the lower number as the more correct one, IMO. At least, assuming that weight loss is your goal, of course.

Just wanted to let everyone know I should have my Gowearfit on Monday. My hubby actually ordered it weeks ago but it got trapped in Spokane for a couple of weeks. Anyway should be here soon. I'm looking forward to it.

How much were they off from each other?

I've kind of followed the rule of thumb that whatever my HRM said, I cut it half. I was wearing mine this morning just to see what it said I burned doing nothing. In about an hour and a half, it said I burned 200 calories. Surfing teh internets is strenuous work!

I would love to have this cool product, but I think the arm band would bug the crap out of me after a while.

For what it's worth, the arm band is something that bugged me at first but now I'm so used to it that I forget I'm wearing it.

And for me (140-ish #'s) doing an hourlong kickboxing / bootcamp style class, GoWear said I burned around 300 kcals. And I was DONE after that hour! What mostly amazes me is how much I burn doing NEAT versus actual workouts...

I agree about the armband ... to me it was sort of like a ring. When I first got engaged and started wearing my ring, I played with it all the time because it felt weird on my finger ... but now after wearing it for so long, I don't even notice it.

That's how my Bugg is for me now too ...

right, julie. I don't even realize mine is there anymore--it is so discreet. I am going to wear it for this entire year at least--I want to get data during marathon season! it will help me maintain during, I am sure.

bytsi, I am also amazed at the difference between a very high intensity run session (speed work), which naturally is short in nature, versus my nice leisurely strolls that I did yesterday. it is so much easier to burn more calories just walking. and a tough weightlifting session doesn't really burn much for me either!

So true! Walking, even at the mall, really burns a lot of calories. In fact I plan to do a low intensity tmill walk this morning, as my appetite REALLY kicked up after a tough interval-style cardio class yesterday.

But... the tough weightlifting helps SO much with body comp (or recomp) and overall strength, so I don't worry much about burning calories during that workout. Still - you'd think with all the grunting I do, it'd burn more than the GoWear says!

Update for Case #308 - "overseas"
Hello Joanna,

At this time we cannot sell our solution (including web subscription) oustside the United States. We are looking to obtain the proper certification to make our solutions available international and encourage you to inquire at a later date.

Thank you,

Leigh, you have probably had this same reply. So sadly at present we cannot use the gofit overseas. Thanks for offering though.

???? No way!!! Leigh said to me a few days ago that she's spoken to them about the subscription and it would be OK! Fingers crossed...

AS for the HRM thing, I've had mine on all day (8 hrs 15 mins so far) and it's telling me I've burned 1939 cals! I've done a 30 min speed walk plus 30 mins training a client, trained another client (= standing around) and done an hour or so of kettlebells and 35 mins rowing intervals (not that hard, including 5 mins easy warm up and cool down). Rest of the day has been computer based and sedentary pretty much. I want to get HR values this week to get a range of different days, then I was hoping to compare these readings to the ones from the Go Wear, but if it's not available to the UK that will scupper my plans...

But the HRM looks extremely high to me so far! Always thought it over-read on workouts, have used the calorie burn feature just to assess how hard I've been working cardio-wise...

I don't think that burn is low at all considering you have done over 2 hours of exercise.

Yeah I got two conflicting answers on it. The only thing you could do is trade out with someone and share the subscription.

I am still looking to see if there is some kind of deal I can look into. If you know someone in the states who doesn't mind carrying the subscriptions in their name but lending you the tracker, it WILL work overseas, they just can't handle billing.

Why is all the good stuff only available in the US huh? I want Prograde to come to the UK too - Prograde Cravers sound lush! Maybe I should move to So Cal... OMG, I like the sound of that, hmmmm, wonder what my boyfriend would think? Might have to think of a better reason than buying stuff... Surfing should work...

Anyway, I have attempted to bribe an American client to help me out with this one, but now we can't do the subscription it's a big ask. I wonder what the problem is...

Also, wore my HRM for 24hrs and 3300 cals burned (30 min fast walk, 60 mins ish KBs - due to more rest than I shoulda had more than too much work, 35 mins rowing intervals, 50 mins teaching dynamic yoga and standing / lugging KBs for 4 training sessions, the rest pretty much sat on my butt, but a reasonably typical day for me...). If I ate that much (the 'if' isnt as hypothetical as it should be as I pretty much did for a few of the days over Christmas!) I'd put on a few lb for sure...

Definitely think the HRM reads too high, just want to have numbers to compare to the Go Wear readings when (if) I get one! Worn the HRM for a few days snowboarding before and was 4000 ish for the day alone, would be good to see what GWF says. Would be good to be able to use the Go Wear windsurfing and surfing too... Man, I really want one!

I must say I hate wearing both the watch and the chest strap of the HRM - especially in bed! I guess I can avoid wearing it in bed again as I know it was about 200 cals, but would be good to wear for a full week to see the differences between rest days and days like yesterday... Think I could cope with the GWF armband though, fengshway, are you really going to wear it for the whole year??

I saw they had the watch display that works with the armband.

I know it's an additional $80, but it sounds like it would work for the overseas people (including you Canadians ), which the subscription works out to for a year. Or do you need the subscription if you have both devices?

HRM really vary on model and even then there are quirks. What brand are you using?

Some of the polar series does have the ability to measure while at rest and give similar results to the bodybugg. Don't know if they have those overseas but that might be your best bet.

Turn burn 3300 at your size, that would have to be some WICKED activity.

yes carolinek250, I will wear it right up until I run my boston qualifier marathon in nov 09. I think that this device will really help me keep my calorie intake where it needs to be during distance training. it is so tempting for me to say, "wow, I ran 20 miles today, so I need to eat whatever I want for a week." not. amazing how easily it is to blow through 20 miles of calories, especially when you count the gels and things you eat during. distance running is not a good way to lose fat, contrary to what people think sometimes. I want to go into marathon season at my goal, and then maintain during the training.

I am curious to see how the bugg and GoWear Fit compare to heart rate monitors. I just got a Polar F6 for Christmas and have been wearing it a lot especially on non-workout days to see where I am at. Leigh and others, I would love to hear any more observations about the accuracy and difference between them. I really want a GoWear, but can't swing it just yet.

HR monitors vary enormously; some of the more expensive polars where it can calculate +/- your VO˛Max etc are relatively accurate and can read your HR at rest, I know my F11 can and seems to give realistic 24 hour data....I don't know about the F6

I was surprised that Carolinek250 recorded only 200 for a night's sleep. Mine records 550 for 9 hours sleep at 5'6 and 134lbs.... 200 out of a daily expenditure of 3300 seems mighy little

Hi Bree! I have both the F11 and the GW Fit. I haven't sat down and done the comparisons, but have time set aside to do that this weekend. I will let you know what the difference tells me.
I do have my F11 programmed with my VO2 test, but the thing is that I was 25 lbs heavier and obviously burning more calories at that time - so I am feeling pretty confident that the numbers on the GWF will be lower, but that would be the reason. I really should go get another VO@ test done and reprogram the Polar with a current weight.

Hmmm... It wasn't 9hrs (unfortunately) but perhaps the chest strap didn't stay properly attached so it might have missed a few. I must say I thought that was pretty low too. My resting HR is about 56.

I have the Polar F11. I can't imagine 3300 is right, but was doing it to compare to Go Wear just to find out. I realised afterwards I had the weight set at 69kg, but after Xmas that was not so far off reality unfortunately! I did think, after Leigh's comment about size (I love being considered 'small' as that's not how I see myself!) that maybe the result of the Polar would be more accurate if I input LBM rather than bodyweight. Will try again with 55kg and see what happens!

When I say 'mine' I don't actually have one yet, but I have a client who is going to be helping me out! I sent her to this thread and now she wants one too, funnily enough!

I know it's an additional $80, but it sounds like it would work for the overseas people (including you Canadians ), which the subscription works out to for a year. Or do you need the subscription if you have both devices?
Nope - not a solution. The watch display constantly needs to be synced with the armband (which I found to be a pain and returned mine when I had a Bugg) BUT it doesn't actually download the data, so the Bugg or GoWear or whatever would still fill its memory within a week or 2 and then "die" until it could be dumped into their program.

Sorry.

Bummer.

GoWear needs to get on the ball. It makes no sense why they it can't be used internationally.

I have the F6 as well. It does have where you can put in VO2 also,, but I've never had it tested.
