First of all, very good podcast there Leigh. I noted with interest what you said about people who've lost weight and have water retention issues (because the body has more pockets/places to put it in a formerly heavy person, as I understand it). It didn't occur to me before, but this may be part of the reason why I gain so much water weight after having beer on the weekends. A 5 to 7 pound gain isn't unusual, but that disappears by Thursday or Friday of the following week, so I'm left with a 1 or 2 pound actual difference when all's said and done. At any rate - thanks for the information, and keep up the good work.

As for water retention.. this used to be hyoooge for me when I was still very-low-carbing. After readopting carbs & starches into my lifestyle , it took 6 months to no longer bloat from starches, though I still avoid gluten & many legumes due to intolerances.
It's almost shocking to have a ginormous bender and be up by less than 1 lbs.
Too bad many people that have adopted a VLC lifestyle are trapped into thinking they can't ever have carbs since they put equal emphasis on weight gain due to water weight as well as fat gain.
I finally got caught up on all the pod casts. Leigh, thanks for answering my question! Once again, I am learning so much from this forum. If anyone else is interested, here is an article on Figure Athlete specifically about hormonal birth control pills:
Am I the only one who has a big problem understanding everything? I've listened to 2 podcasts now and had to start over several times as I just couldn't grasp what was being said.
That was what I was thinking, Stingo. I understand no problem, but I live in Alabama. If you can understand Alabama, you can understand almost anything! lol (and I don't think your accent is that strong anyway, Leigh!)

I agree, not a strong accent, but Espi's from the Netherlands, so... it might play differently in her ears.

My comprehension of written English is just fine , but spoken English w an accent (same actually for Dutch) throws me off. I've even put on a headphone but it wouldn't help. It's not even a strong accent but I dunno, the melody of a sentence.. ?
It's been a while though since I routinely listened to NPR or other news stations.
I'm glad you posted this, because now I'm finally listening to the podcasts, and the whole water retention/carb thing really makes sense. I have gotten SO frustrated with myself being "perfect" all week long, and being "almost perfect" on the weekends (still averaging my calorie deficit for the week, still under maintenance daily, just a little less of a deficit and a little higher on the simple carbs on the weekend) - and surprise surprise, I weigh in Monday the same as last week or even a bit more. But by Wed. I was down some. Over and over - It never occurred to me that carbs and water retention was why. That is such a comforting feeling - I AM doing things right, I'm just allowing myself to get temporarily puffy now and again, but it's not "real" weight gain, if that makes any sense.

It makes sense to me, Nora. Water made a huge difference to me and to losing. I also started paying more attention to my sodium intake so that I'd be aware (and prepared) for the rise in weight if I ate too much sodium one night or something.

In my log I've posted a chart with my weekly wt & calorie intake averages. It shows how much of an influence a cycle has on both food intake (huge calorie spikes every time) as well as on BW. For the longest time I would think it was just calories/carbs but hormonal influences are really more important.
As for actual food-induced water retention, a bigger factor for me is fiber intake. Every time I eat a ton of fiber, the weight gain is waaay larger than for salt.
