Default Increasing NEAT

This may seem like a silly thread, but I thought it would be a good thing to start for people like me who are generally sedentary and looking for ways to increase their NEAT.

What are some ways of increasing NEAT?

Take the stairs, park farther away, stand more, clean the house, mow the lawn, clean out the closets.

Don't sit down.

Don't try to make one super trip from the car, instead of three easy trips.

Cook more.

Don't clean as you go. Clean after you eat.

Clean more.

Walk places.

Use a standup desk or work at a counter.

Do the bills standing up.

Fold the laundry standing up.

Don't watch any tv. Or at least stand up and watch (works better if you live alone).

garden, walk to the store, when shopping use a basket (if possible) rather than a cart, hand wash dishes, evening strolls, reorganize the garage, wash the windows, take up babysitting

Limit the internet to 30 minutes maximum a day. (This is a hard one - but I'm trying)

Or build a laptop stand for your treadmill/stationary bike.

Probably our most frequent "intentional" NEAT is to walk to the grocery store, even if we're just going to get something to drink (diet, of course). It's only 1/2 mile each way, but it's nice to get out of the house and chat while walking.

Don't forget - walk your dog (or get one if you don't have one).

I love my treadmill desk for strolling while I'm online.

Remember that overall NEAT is a subconscious effort of movement. When we try to increase it on high levels, truly, it becomes exercise. That being said being aware is a good thing and staying active is a good thing. just wanted to make that clarity between exercise, conscious, and subconscious movement.

As for some more tips for low grade activity or reminders for activity. Two of my favorites are ...

Walking whenever you use the phone
Setting a timer for every min interval you choose to stretch, do some jumping jacks, just wake up in general.

I just make myself be really inefficient. I take the longer way to get somewhere or I make several trips to empty the car. I also try to do more standing than sitting.

I've been working on this lately, too.

I use my exercise ball for a chair at my desk on my non-lifting days. I've found that bouncing while surfing can really activate mah hams and glutes, not to mention core.

You might also try uncommon cleaning projects (like washing the walls, scrubbing kitchen cabinets, ironing everything in the closet, dusting your books, etc.).

And when all else fails, I take a walk.

That's all I got for now.
