Default RMR Resting Metabolism Rate machine/test?

Our fitness center at work is having a RMR machine called the Body Gem and RMR testing for $25 next week.

I read in FLTS these are not accurate. Is it worth my money, or should I just not bother?

I did 3 days pulse and temperature before I began REPAIR, and my heart beat is only 55. This is normal for me. I see in FLTS book that my rate is 20-beats below what is normal for women. I don't know how that affects my workouts and fat loss. My doctor said it was healthy.

replies about the machine would be helpful, as I have to sign up for an appointment.

Ahh, looking in my vertical files, I see I have
1. test Jan 2006: RMR 1650 x 1.5 = 2,475 - 1000cal/day = budget 1475
2. test 11/2004: RMR 1190 x 1.5 = 1785 - 1000cal/day = budget???

WILDLY different results
I see that the 2004 test was on the same machine they're using next week.

What do you think? Another, 2008 reading? or not?

thanks, Etana

Leigh has a good post on her blog about it. Bottom line is those done in teh gym setting are not accurate.

Yeah, I knew i read it somewhere in LFTS or here; it confirms exactly my past 2 tests 1100 and 1789!

Well, I'll do the Tanika scale Body Fat test next week; it's free...
any tips to get it most accurate?

Thanks, now I have the $25 for the foam roller; much better use of $25, I hope!

From the manual for my Tanita:

"To ensure accuracy, readings should be taken without clothing and under consistent
conditions of hydration. If you do not undress, always remove your socks or
stockings, and be sure the soles of your feet are clean before stepping on the
measuring platform.Be sure that your heels are correctly aligned with the
electrodes on the measuring platform. Don't worry if your feet appear too large for the
unit -accurate readings can still be obtained if your toes overhang the platform.
It is best to take readings at the same time of day. Try to wait about three
hours after rising, eating, or hard exercise
before taking measurements.
While readings taken under other conditions may not have the same
absolute values, they are accurate for determining the percentage of change
as long as the readings are taken in a consistent manner. To monitor
progress, compare weight and body fat percentage taken under the same
conditions over a period of time."

Probably the lowest number I've seen was in the evening, before my evening snack (at bedtime), however, for trending purposes I just take it in the morning when I would normally weigh myself.

As to the highlighted section... there isn't really a point in my day when I haven't eaten or exercised within 3 hours.
