I understand that nutrition immediately following a workout is important, whether the workout is lifting weights or running. There is a "window" following exercise when the body can more rapidly process nutrients and help post-exercise recovery. And I've also heard that pre-workout nutrition can be just as important. But I was wondering about nutrition on the day after a workout. If this is a rest day, is an intermittent fast (no food until the evening) a bad idea, or can it work as part of a fat-loss strategy?

I generally eat whole foods and don't use supplements, but after a hard lifting workout I will often have a protein shake to make sure that I'm getting enough protein and nutrients for recovery. I had been using Meso-Tech because it was recommended in NROL, and I like the convenience of the packets and it tastes great. I mix it with skim milk and I also eat some solid food post-workout, usually a salad, and maybe some chicken or tuna or cottage cheese.

I went to buy some more Meso-Tech recently, but there wasn't any so I asked for a recommendation for a post-workout protein drink. I was told that I should get one that was only whey isolates since they absorb the quickest. I was also told that I should not mix it with milk because the casein in the milk would slow the absorption of the whey. I used to think that a mix of fast-acting and slower-acting proteins would be the best for overall recovery.

Is it true that casein or egg protein or anything else slows the absorption of whey protein? If so, is this actually a bad thing? Should I only use whey post-workout, and only mix it with water? I don't really like the taste of it mixed with water. What about eating solid food -- will it also affect the absorption of the protein?

(BTW, the stuff I bought is GNC's AMP Wheybolic Extreme 60. It got good reviews on most forums for taste, mixability, and quality of ingredients. It is rather expensive, though.)

I've resolved to try a slow bulk..

ie. I want to try eating at a 500 cal surplus in order to gain muscle with as little fat as possible..

According to that theory, I should be gaining only about a lbs a month..

So what happens when I gain a lbs or 2 in a week is I freak out and go back to eating low carb and at maintenence, or even a deficit until I lose that extra lbs or two again..

But I'm wondering, should I just accept the extra pounds, keep eating at a surplus but maybe take it down a couple hundred cals until the weight gain levels off, then do a cut only when the BF starts getting up there..

Or do I deal with the weight gain first by eating at a deficit, then try again when that's accomplished by eating at a surplus of say 300 cals, rather than 500, and see what happens?

I use a GWF rather than a formula to calculate maintenence requirements, so my intake varies quite a bit from day to day according to calorie burn (some days it will, be 2800, some days 3400), but it IS linear in that it is 500+ over maintenence (well, that's the goal)..

How do YOU guys go about bulking?

Oh, as far as workout routine, I was doing NROL till I tweaked my back, now I just do Bulgarian squats (90x12x4), chin ups (5x6), push ups (15x6), step ups (90x10x4), and crunches (15x3).. I go every second day, and when my body's telling me to take an extra day, I do.. The plan is to do a routine like the one above for 4-6 weeks, then take a week off, then do something else (NROL again, probably).. The goal is hypertrophy..

Just wondering what myths people have learned are not true since becoming students of diet and nutrition? For me the top 5 would be (in no particular order)

1) Exercise speeds up your metabolism.

2) If you want to lose weight you just need to start exercising. Another way to put it .. you can out exercise a bad diet.

3) A pound of muscle burns 50 calories so if you gain muscle your body will burn a lot more calories than before.

4) Eating in the eveing causes fat gain.

5) Eating breakfast is really important to your health.

6) Complex carbs are much better for you than simple carbs in regards to losing weight. In otherwords you're much better off eating 2 slices or wheat bread than white bread which will make you fat.

7) Cholesterol is bad for you. (Eggs)

8) Fat is bad for you.

Looks like I went over 5. Those are the main ones I can think of off the top of my head. What about you?

My wife wants to do Weight Watchers

On our way home from the gym this morning, my wife expressed frustration with her scale weight of 148 pounds, even though she's been exercising a lot...

On our way home from the gym this morning, my wife expressed frustration with her scale weight of 148 pounds, even though she's been exercising a lot more (now up to 4 x week, consisting of 2 step classes and 2 "power" classes at the gym), and she (and I) have noticed improvments in her physique, including trimmer stomach, face, and better fitting pants. She talked about doing Weight Watchers, and I'm not sure how to guide her.

Not that I really know what I'm doing, but I generally try to follow Precision Nutrition (though probably closer to 80% compliance than to 90.....I'm still doing pretty well), a few TNT recipes, keep the carbs low other than heavy training days, avoid processed foods, etc. I've gotten her into smoothies and trying to up her protein and limit her carbs a bit, eating more frequently with smaller meals, etc. She does well when she actually listens to me, because I try to get my advice from reputable sources.

Other than the fact that I don't know anybody who has made a significant, lasting changes with Weight Watchers (unless anybody here can say differently?), she knows better than to worry about scale weight. She's been steadily at the gym for about 5-6 weeks now (after a couple years of knee injuries and 10-15 pound weight gain), and I think she's doing great. Would I like her to skip the step classes and replace it with some more weight training or intervals? Yes, but she's not really open to that. She likes the class atmosphere, and at least there are two weight sessions during the Power class.

Whenever I try to help her out and get her to read something, such as this forum, Precision Nutrition, trainer's blogs, or any "serious" diet strategies that I believe "work" better than WW, she's not willing to read it, saying that she "knows what to do."

Should I keep on her, or try to support her with whatever she wants to do? She's not a beginner, she has a good knowledge base, she's a PT, but she's falling into beginner mistakes and not focusing on the real gains she's making when she knows better.

Any advice?
