Has anyone ever taken it? These things are so expensive sold as ZMA but I figure that if you buy zinc, magnesium and B6 and take it all together is the same thing, no?

I take it.
I remember this topic brought up in another thread about taking all 3 together. One thing against it was that the type of zinc & Mg+ they sold individually wasn't the type of zinc & Mg+ that was in ZMA.
I like it though. It also promotes deep sleep and gives you some pretty surreal dreams.

Yeah, I've used it in the past and enjoyed the deep sleep it gives you. I agree with Joe, you don't get the same benefit from buying separate as with buying the actual ZMA. Shop around on-line, if you're looking at a GNC you're going to get raped. Good luck.

January 2nd and 3rd. Vitamin World. $10 for a bottle of 90, which is one month's worth. (The deal is buy one get one free, but if you only buy one it is 50% off... don't let them tell you otherwise!)
I use it every night. It helps me sleep, which I believe in turn has helped me avoid muscle cramps and aids in recovery.
Hell, try it for one month. It's definitely worth $10 to find out.

The hangover/fatigue was too great for me when using the regular dose but I think that this is because the GNC version has vallerian root with it. I had to cut back. I have seen benefits while taking it but I'm unsure if they are really due to the ZMA. Definite increase in dreams.
My bottle doesn't say to avoid dairy, but I've read that dairy impairs the absorbtion of ZMA.

This is the question I've been avoiding to ask: does it really increase anabolic hormones? I avoid the word anabolic because in my mind it sounds like I'm talking about steroids, which I think is a horrible thing (yes, I'm such a square).

a·nab·o·lism n.
The phase of metabolism in which simple substances are synthesized into the complex materials of living tissue.
I take it to help me with sleep, not for the anabolic properties. And it's not that expensive. I pay about $25 for a 2 month supply at Vitamin Shoppe.

I was researching about the guy who invented ZMA and seems like there is a lot of controversy, including some criminal investigations about him. I was hoping the gurus of this site would give us some input.

drs: Yep, it was definitely the valerian giving you the drowsiness. ZMA has no effects like that. Valerian has basically stoned me in the past though.
As for the dairy: yes, because calcium inhibits the uptake of the zinc.

If we still had the search function (or when we get it back), you'll find a lot of discussion on ZMA. I buy the ingredients separately and take it off and on. I think Johnka said he kind of "cycles" it, too.
