A friend has suggested a new multi vitamin to me. It has large %'s of the vitmain B's in it. 1250% of the RDA for B12, %5000 of the RDA for B6, etc. Is this necessary in a multi vitmain, and can it be harmful? Thanks.

With those large doses you only need to take one every few days.

No vitamin becomes harmful with more then RDA because you simply excrete (piss out) what you don't need.

Vitamin B is a water soluble vitamin so you can take as much as you want and there wont be any overdosing.

It CAN be harmful if you take too much of fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E & K)

B-vitamins aren't stored in the system, and must be replenished every day. That said, extremely large doses, unless directed by a definite medical condition, are often overkill, and you'll pee a lot of it out. You likely get quite a bit of the B's from foods (fortified products especially these days) but a good solid b-complex is still a much-needed plus for most of us. Find a moderately sized one and take it every day.

Vitamins A, D, E, and K are stored in the liver, and are toxic in large amounts. However, even highly powered vitamins don't have enough to cause this toxicity on their own. I'd advise staying away from them anyway, because they are unneccesary on a daily basis. These are the ones you can take every other day.

By the way, check the serving size. Often times these large-dosed vitamins are actually 2 tablets per serving, meaning that you could easily just take one a day and be safe and efficient. You can also buy a vitamin splitter (for like $5) and simply take half a day if the serving size is indeed just one tablet.

Thanks for the helpful posts...I guess that explains why my pee was flourescent yellow this morning....I have to admit I had a lot of energy this morning when taking the vitamins. It might of just been the placebo effect of taking it though. Thanks again.
