I have a friend who is trying to start eating clean. The problem is that he travels a lot, and finds it difficult to eat clean. Anybody out there have advice, tips, pointers and good planning information?

If the company's paying the tab, then it's pretty easy to order clean food at restaurants. He might just have to order things a la carte or ask for substitutions. Most places will switch up veggies for potatoes, ditch the cheese, etc.

When I travel, I pack a bunch of nuts and stuff to take, then pickup a bunch of fruit and veggies at the local store. Hopefully, there's a mini-bar fridge, but I've even pickup up one of those $1 styrofoam coolers for my room. The coffee maker "boils" water for tea, oatmeal, etc.

The last place I stayed had a continental breakfast. Each morning, I grabbed some tea, fruit, oatmeal packets, and A LOT of hardboiled eggs to stash in the mini-bar fridge for later.

My store run also included cans of tuna, chicken, green beans, spinach and a small bottle of dressing.

I also took my leftovers from eating out back to the fridge and used the veggies and cold meat for salad the next day.

I also took one shaker bottle and a good size portion of powder (and a scoop) for the week. I took one protein bar for each day, too. Plus a couple for the airplane, along with nuts, jerky, and fruit, so I wouldn't have to eat the bad food.

I "splurged" a bit and bought more pre-cooked meats and cheeses than I do at home, but it still came out cheaper (for my company) than having me eat out all the time.

If he drives everywhere, a small cooler can be used to transport and keep precooked food in the hotel room if it does not have a small refrigerator.

For the flying traveler, meal replacement shakes and bars pack well, and I too have used the in room coffee pot to cook oatmeal. Canned meat like tuna and chicken breast are another good source.

I take extra storage bags for leftovers and cover them with ice in the bathroom sink or ice bucket.

It takes some careful planning but it can be done. The guy that got me into the fitness lifestyle travels every week calling on customers and he walks around at about 8% BF all the time. Of course the waiter’s eyes start to glass over when he orders his food specially prepared.
