I thought perhaps this could be a thread about mistakes we've all made while bulking. Things that backfired, for whatever reason, short- or long- term. Then others can read it and hopefully avoid the same.

When: Yesterday morning
What: Oatmeal, whey and peanut butter
Why: Ridiculously filling!!! I know some of you are probably thinking "Well, duuuuh!" But my thought was : "major calories!" However, getting myself to eat again was a challenge. I felt like puking after lunch.
Moral of the Story: Be careful with calorie-dense foods, especially combos of them like oatmeal and PB, because they destroy the appetite that is so necessary for bulking.

Eating really good during the week and then thinking if you slack a little on the weekends you'll still gain weight. This is a 24/7 job sorry no slacking!

Good idea RH.

When: last Sunday morning
What: slept late (good for growth) missed 3 meals! (very bad). Woke up and tried to eat all three meals at the same time. (very bad) Damn, was laying on the couch like I was gonna die for the next two hours.
Moral of the Story: Don't be stupid and try to eat something like 1200 calories all at the same time to catch up. Still space your meals out, even if only by an hour or so.

Mistake: Not eating enough. Take the number you think you need to eat to gain, and you will probably need to add about 1,000 cals to it. I had to anyway. I way underestimated.

The second my abs started to fade I was like "Oh no...I'm getting fat, better do more cardio and eat less calories." Don't make this mistake. You will wind up just boucing baak and forth between the same weight(for me it was 154lbs and 160lbs) and your will limit any sort of progress you might have made as far as strength and mass gain. Realize that some fat gain just comes with the territory when you bulk. Yes, fat gain can be limited by eating clean and doing some cardio, but it's still gonna happen for most of us.

My biggest problem while bulking was eating semi-clean foods for the sake of getting calories. I'd be out with friends, and order a turkey burger knowing it wasn't lean, but I'd just say -Meh, I need the calories, it's alright. I think this led to a lot more fat gain for me than I had hoped for.

Some absolutely awesome points. Anyone who is or will be bulking ought to be printing this page out.

I had the same problems the emartin had. It was way to easy to rationalize eating poorly in the name of calories.

Next time I am going to treat it just like I do when I'm cutting.

I think this thread needs to be revived.

Dont think for one second you can go through any kind of fitness journey without first preparing your meals for the day. I find that most if not all of the times I dont prepare my meals, I wind up going off my diet and either eating not enough calories, or calories that aren't clean and wont help my bulking efforts.

Like deserve, abs are a bit of a myth in my world. But I've done the yo-yo 2 weeks of bulking cut for a month, 2 weeks of bulking cut for a month.

Stuck with it for 3 months and it worked...how bout that.

Here is a good article that explains how to bulk without adding much fat. Also has a pretty good setup for 3500 clean calories-
