You just do. Stay off of the scale, weigh once a week or so. To further that, see how your clothing feels. Pants getting baggy? That is a good sign.

Looking in the mirror.
Talking to all the experts/friends I have on this site. Knowing that I'll have to answer to them if I fall off the fitness wagon.
Having pictures of physiques I admire up on my gym walls.
the feeling I get when people I don't even know ask me questions about how to build up "those muscles" as they point to my arms.
the looks and comments I get from my wife and friends.
Everywhere I look I find motivation. But first and foremost you've got to dig deep within yourself. If you don't want it, really want it, chances are you aren't going to see the results you want.
Good luck and stick around here for awhile. Read alot and if you have questions ask.

Well, you've been here for only a few weeks.
I am of the belief that you should never ask yourself "How long does this take?" You're eating better and you're exercising. That's the good news. What you have done is made a lifestyle and a lifetime decision. Hopefully you will stay with this for the rest of your life. You may work a little harder now to reach a goal you want but you'll never stop.
The motivation is you have improved your life.

One of the things that motivates me the most is how much fun I can have that my "fatter and/or less fit" family and friends can't..

Are you lifting weights on a regular basis or just "dieting" and doing some cardio. Tell us more about your routines, etc.
If you tell us what exercises you're doing, how often, how heavy, etc. we can better direct you.

1. welcome to the forums
2. Motivation is within. Write down a list of why you're doing what you're doing and deside if it's really important to you or not. Look at the list every day. Seek to be an inspiration to yourself.
3. Good shoes are an absolute MUST for running. Try to keep a smoooooooth stride. Or try walking, swimming, biking.
4. Educate yourself as much as possible. There's ton's of research availible...it's up to you to learn it and apply it to your lifestyle. If you want to get real results you have to be anal. It's alot easier to be anal if you have a educated\formulated plan of attack.
