Just curious what your thoughts are on Vitamin D defficincies. Many people here do not drink milk or eat cereals. At least in Canada milk is the only product that must be vitamin D fortified. Cereals in general are also fortified w/ vitamin D.

A few studies done in the american mid-west and Canada found that over 95% of the population is vitamin D defficient due to lack of sunlight. This is even taking into account that many of these people do consume milk. Seems to me like underconsuming it is a big problem.

Will a vitamin supplement cover us? Not really.. most provide around 400IU's daily when we should be atleast getting 1000 IUs daily at the higher latitudes. I also found it interesting that many studies showed that oral doses below 300 IU's caused zero rise in blood Vitamin D levels. This is probably due to absorption problems.

Vitamin D is also pretty essential in Calcium uptake and utilization. Calcium intake PERHAPS being an issue w/ people who eat high protein diets like us.

Basically, with the lack of dairy in some peoples diets here, how many are concerned about getting enough vitamin D? Non-skimmed milk is actually a pretty perfect vector for vitamin D uptake. Because it is fat-soluble the little bit fat helps w/ absorption. It is also found w/ its natural partner in crime calcium. Some claim the calcium is better absorbed in milk due to the sugars present(lactose).

All non-distilled animal oils and organs are also high in vitamin D but I have never been much of a organ meat eater.

Toxicity of supplements is also pretty questionable as we make make upwards of 20,000IU's from sun exposure in tropical climates.

Anyways, I was looking to get some info and opinions from the good folks of jpfitness

Late for class so I couldnt spell/grammar check. I apologize for my abuse of the english language.

I switch from a low dosed vitamin D fish oil supplement to a high dose vitamin D fish oil supplement, I pay 8 minute visits to the sun bed every 3 days and always take my fish oil with dairy or foods with fats.
I'm not worried about it at all

Fyi, tanning beds don't help with Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin is the result of UVB rays. Tanning salons are 95%+ UVA Rays and next to no UVB rays.
