The University of Michigan released a new recommended "Food Pyramid" that hits the nail right on the head.

I'm not so sure about lean meat being a weekly thing, but that may be more personal bias vs legitimate claim.

Well, we have to keep in mind that these recommendations are for the so-called "average" person to maintain status quo. If you're an athlete or interested in making changes in your body, then you would adjust it.

you beat me to it LoD!

It's a bit different than our trusted government's model, yes? Anything recommending dark chocolate and alcohol is good by me.

I agree with fruits and vegetables positioned at the base, but I don't agree that lean meats and fish need to be all the way at the top. I also don't agree that whole grains need to be near the base of the pyramid. I don't think grain-based foods are essential in the diet. They are convenient, inexpensive, and practical, but I probably wouldn't position them there.

The half-empty me, thinks that political contributions help form the pyramid.

The half-full me, thinks that the govt. tries to make it healthier enough to matter, yet not so healthy that the average person would just give it all up.

Partly, "not so healthy," means "expensive." Also, the ideal would be so far from what people typically eat that they would just ignore it.

just as an observation...more so than anything else. but I've noticed the food bills haven't been too ridiculous after committing to the vegis and whatnot.

I don't need nearly the amount of meat or drink as much milk, but vegi's are fairly cheep. Cheese is a little pricy, but with 4-6oz meat servings 2x a day and 99% of grain based carbs coming from oatmeal in the morning...it's not nearly as bad as it was when I was trying to "eat massive".

You're never going to compete with mac & cheese or ramian noodles, but you can compete with a pepsi & snickers!

Isn't there a new official pyramid out there as well? One which has upped the water standards?
