You can have as many as you want. If you're lifting, a good amount of protein is ideal. So 3-4 shakes a day is certainly admissable.
However, most people agree that it is healthier to get most of your protein from whole food sources (because of the other nutrients that go along with them), like chicken, fish, beef, cheese, etc. And in fact it is also optimal for training results to do it this way.
Think of it this way: If you weigh 180 pounds, then the consensus is that you'd need at least 180g of protein every day (of course I don't know your specific goals). Now if you have 4 shakes a day, at about 20-25g per shake... you can still take in over 50% of your protein from other sources.
Anyway, my take is this: if you can afford it and are careful to include whole foods, then go for it!

From JB ( www.johnberardi.com)
Q: Is there a problem with consuming protein shakes for most of my protein intake?
A: Besides the fact that your muscles of mastication will forget how to chew, there are several other problems. If you're drinking nothing but shakes, you're probably forgetting that food contains much more of physiological value than its macronutrient profile. Protein shakes fail to provide fiber, many vitamins and minerals, and other substances that can improve health and performance. Check out Lean Eatin' Part I and Part II for appropriate food lists. In addition, check out some of my Appetite For Construction columns where I discuss fiber and vitamin intake. The other problem with eating nothing but protein shakes is that it's hard to impress women when you invite them over for "dinner" and pull out your crusty blender and whip up a frothy MRP.

Howdy,
I like OldGuys post. Aside from all the nutritional info, I find that I dont get satiated as well from shakes.
When I have my mid morning and afternoon snacks as Casein shakes, I dont feel satisfied for very long. This typically leads to some sort of benge in the afternoon. Albeit the benge is normally peanuts or turkey slices, I still eat something I havent "planned" to eat.
EMartin10 said the first thing that came to my head. When I drink lots of protein shakes, really tears my gut up. I feel bad for people walking behind me. Haha..
Logistically, if you are taking in more than 3 shakes, you are cutting out a lot of solid food. This gets wicked old, hella quick.
I look at protein shakes as a supplement, not a food group.
