Anybody here drink it? It's a South American tea. Apart from non-specific medicinal uses and promoting general "wellness" (a term I've come to dislike) it is also a plesant-tasting, mild stimulant.
I have a tin of it and it's a nice lift in the afternoon in place of the full caffeine hit from coffee.
My routine now consists of coffee in the morning (Trader Joe's Medium Roast sumatra whole bean, yeah!), gunpowder green tea at lunch, Yerba Mate mid-afternoon, green tea at dinner and before bed. Water by the liter throughout.
Anyway, just wondering if anybody else has any experience with or knowledge of the stuff.

Hey Rock I know a little while back, maybe 1-2 months ago there was a huge discussion about yerba mate over at BB.com. I believe it was in either the Losing Fat section or the Nutrition section.

When I drink that, I am more hyper than a crack addict. I am EVERYWHERE, talk way too fast, can't stop shaking. It's good though, I enjoy it!!!

I work at a Coffee Lounge on the weekends, and I think the owner told me that we're going to start selling it soon, so I'll try it out when we get it and let you know what I thinkabout it...

So, I've encountered two different guys pawning yerba mate, lately. Both had setup little sampling stations in "natural" food stores.
Don't know if was the mate or some other supplement, but both guys were mellooooooow...
One guy even came in a hippie-style bus that was covered with all sorts of cool yerba mate art.
Apparently, it's pronounced "mah-tay". ...and your eyes should be half-lidded when you say it, man. (melloooooow....)

Weird. It's intended for improved mental clarity and general rejuvenation. It does have a mild, pleasant effect for me.

Tastes great, less filling! Actually it is pleasant but I haven't received the kick yet. Maybe I need to brew it stronger! Still, way better than Coke...thanks for the info!

I've spent a good deal of time in Argentina and Uruguay. The people drink large quantities there as well as in Paraguay. It's good stuff. I drink it at home often. You can get it at many gourmet grocery stores, import stores like Cost Plus, and even oddly many Middle Eastern markets. I agree with RockHard that it gives you a very pleasant, relaxing, yet clarifying effect. I don't know why. It just does!
Mate is traditionally drunk out of a gourd which is also called a mate.
