Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
I was at the gym this morning and overheard two (I'm sorry ladies...)bimbo's talking about having to drop weight quick before they leave on vacation. Drumroll please....One replies "oh, I've got mine all set, Im just going to drink 5-7 pure protien shakes a day, that way my metabolism won't drop, but I'll lose the weight" The conversation continues but I won't waste our time. I was horrified. These were both women I see all the time at the gym, their fairly attractive, fit women too, so I was pretty surprised. I mean I know people before shows go wicked lo cal and mega protien right, but this is downright idiotic! I fear for any other people that may have overheard them and thought it was ok. I am kicking myself now for not saying anything, sorta like not taking the keys from someone thats been drinking.
Unfortunately, a lot of women, or people in general, think a drastic change in diet is the best way to lose weight fast. But it's not what keeps bodyfat off or what keeps you healthy for the long haul. Don't let it bother you too much. If they were talking to you directly, you could have suggested something different to them, but because you overheard them, probably wasn't the time to come in and say something. Besides, any weight that they may drop off before vacation...I guarantee will come right back on (and probably plus some), after vacation is over, and they go back to eating the way they normally do
Like Clark's post shows, you CAN use something like that to shed body fat quickly. Also, check out some of the threads (they've got V, V-diet, V-liever, etc. in the title) in the Training Log section here at JPFitness.
But, that should probably only be used by people who are bodybuilders and bodybuilder types. People who are used to changing their diets up and down to meet their goals aren't likely to yo-yo back up again, like someone who's just desperate to lose fat before a trip.
Unfortunately for them, they probably don't realize that going from an ultra low cal and carb diet, directly to typical vacation food and drink, will probably result in sudden and dramatic fat gain! When you switch back to normal eating, it's got to be a gradual change...
I'm gonna read clarks link right now.
TG I agree with you, its more like just the desire to wack em over the head, but I feel the same way when I see people hunched over for dear life on the stairmaster too or walking on a wicked incline on the tmill holding on the rails, etc....
OK, I think thats crazy, maybe if I were competing I would try that. I would judge that as well researched, thought out, intelligent "plan" I dont believe these girls were on the same level. Just a guess. I didn't mean to come off as judgemental so early in my hardcore weightlifting/higher protien and clean eating deal, It just seemed way out of hand.
I agree with your assesment that the girls you were overhearing in the gym probably did not have a well thought out plan such as the velocity diet, and furthermore that they more than likely did not already have a solid diet.
Context is key when discussing "drastic" diets and their implementation. If you have a rock solid diet and have hit a plateau in your fat loss then something like the velocity diet is definitely a viable option...escpecially if you are competing or going on vacation and want to show off what you have worked so hard for. If, however you have a crappy diet, don't really know much about nutrition, and are desperate to just shed a few pounds then the velocity diet and it's counterparts could spell disaster for you. It's more than likely too low calorie and too strict for the novice to stick to.
