Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
Has anyone tried it? I've been using ZMA for quite some time now. I don't know if I'm wasting money or if it's useful.
It's basically a mixture of Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin B6..
You're supposed to take it at night before bed. It has a couple good studies behind it. Just wondering if anyone else takes it and what they think.
I used to take it consistently, and now only sporadically. I think the plusses are that most athletes are more zinc-depleted than the average person, so it counters that, and it allows for a deeper sleep (which of course means better recovery). I lean towards thinking that all of the "testosterone boosting" that supposedly results from its use comes (if at all) from the deeper sleep. I have some very vivid dreams when I take it. As for obvious "results", well, I can't say anything has directly linked itself to the ZMA. But I do believe it is a positive supplement from which athletes can reap some benefit.
i take it on days i lift mainly because ive always had a hard time gettin enough sleep, and i found that it really does give me a deeper longer sleep, as for actual "gains" from it i doubt it, but one thing i have noticed is that when i get a full nights sleep i wake up less sore so thats reason enough for me to take it...though to save a bit i just take it on lifting days
Couldn't you just go to the local vitamin store/health food store/Walmart/Costco and get a bottle of zinc, magnesium and B6 supps? I would guess a lot cheaper.
I did take it but stopped because of what I just pointed out. Although I know the companies always be sure and add the "propriety blend" which you have no idea what it is.
I gave it up, but to each his own.
Quick question about ZMA. What's the deal w/ ZMA and calcium? The bottle I saw at the store said not to eat w/ dairy or calcium supplements. If I eat cottage cheese every night before bed is there any point in taking ZMA or would it just be a waste of money? Thanks a lot.

ZMA is made up of Zinc and Magnesium ASPARTATE, which is not the same form as the stuff you buy in the individual bottles at your local pharmacy.
As for the calcium thing: Take the ZMA one hour before bed (on a relatively empty stomach). Eat the cottage cheese right before you lie down. The ZMA should digest within that 45 minutes- 1 hour time before the CC.
As for whether it works better than the individual bottles because of the aspartate form, or if it gives you vivid dreams, or boosts T, or whatever... lots of people have different reactions, just like creatine. Give it a fair chance, see if the effects are worth the $$$, and go from there.
Calcium messes with the absorption of zinc and other minerals. That's why they suggest you don't take it with zinc because you wont get the greatest rate of absorption.

I heard it's good for preventing muscle atrophy (catabolism)
--------------------
I think HMB makes those claims.

Yeah, I used to take HMB too, but that got really expensive.. I mean you have to take like 3-4 pills 3x/day! Supposedly it contains an amino acid that prevents catabolism.
Alright, ive been reading up a bit, so opinions/results/personal experiances would be cool to know. Before i spend the cash, should i invest in ZMA, HMB, or Tribulus? Im looking forsomething to help with testostorone levels and so obviously some muscle gain, and fat loss wouldnt be bad. Any opinions or advice on where to buy/most cost efficient would be great. Thanks! (i know it varies by person, but wanted to know where to put some of my money to try something new out)
Scratch tribulus its marketed as more of a sexual stimulant, thats great and all, but not a concern.

Uhhhh... ZMA and HMB... No... Worthless... and aren't you a teenager? YOu don't need any boost in testosterone whatsoever. You've got plenty of that going on.
I bet you'd find several other threads in here about ZMA if you're interested. I buy and take the ingredients separately (aspartate formulation) and take them fairly regularly. The sleep and dreams part is worth the price of admission and I do believe there's a T response for me.
That's COOL about the Tower of Power band member! I actually saw them... in Lubbock, Tx, of all places!
faraz you have to buy them individually. some supplement companies out there sell stacks , but andro is now illegal. DHEA is the strongest stuff out there, but it is still controversial. try just stacking DHEA with trib and see what happens.

I buy magnesium-potassium aspartate. I haven't noticed the zinc in that formulation and, honestly, I wasn't too worried about it being exactly the same as ZMA... just reasonably close.
