Hi All. Bad mood because this morning, on a whim, a very dreary eyed "trainer" walked by as I walked into the gym. I asked if he could take my bodyfat. This is suppposed to be one of the "better" trainers. Well he did it and it said 31%!!! Now some background is, about a year or so ago, I had a guy that owns his own Bodybuilding/Training place do it. He did both with calipers and an electronic impedance and took an average and got about 27%. Than I had this guy at my local gym take it every so often (he's gone now, new owner took over and fired all of the old trainers) and he on average would get around the same, maybe a % higher or so.
My tanita (which I know can be very inaccurate) has gone down a couple %'s. Who do I believe?!
I'm in a very bad mood right now.

Hey OldGuy (btw, how old are you?)
The mirror says in the past few weeks, I look more muscular, so I was shocked!

I'm neither.

Rather than get caught up in the numbers game (weight, body fat) if you like what you see in the mirror, and you're seeing progress, let that be your guide.

That, and a little bit of patience.

What ya doing on a forum giving such sage advice if your not smokin?

I have weaned myself from the scale (pretty much) because of the obvious issues with the scale when lifting weights etc.. but I thought the bodyfat thing was a good way to measure.
Sigh...ok, patience...here I come.

Once JP finds out I'll be banned. Hope he doesn't read this forum too much.

Depends on who is doing the measuring. There is a margin of error as with most of the measuring devices. Go by how you look, how you feel...are your clothes fitting differently? From what I have heard, The Tanita really isn't much good. I do use an Omron just to make sure I'm staying within a certain range. That will also have a degree of error, but if I use it consistently, I can gauge any changes. Try not to get too caught up in the numbers. You felt great and could see changes occuring prior to getting measured. So chances are, positive changes are happening

Traininggirl, thanks, I was just caught really off guard! I mean I know how inaccurate Tanita's are but again was using it to measure "difference" so when Dude at the Gym got 31, I wanted to puke. I know I shouldnt focus on the numbers, those were just kinda big numbers to ignore. I just shouldnt have even gotten it done!

I always go with the mirror also, full length body mirror can do the trick. but if you want a more quanitifable answer the calipers can do. also, ever tried measuring body parts? just a thought!

Slow one, are you a chick? If I were to guess you are a chick that likes older men. But in todays world you never know.

Nope, Ima guy that likes older men.....kidding.
Well, lets see, first of all I dont really think 51 is so old, especially today, secondly my husband is 10 years older which makes him 46 and he doesnt seem old and thirdly I had a super serious relationship when I was in my early 20's and he was 25 years older! So, Yeah maybe...

Well, you have to be reallllly nice and treat the girl like gold, understanding that the liklihood of the relationship lasting forever is close to minimal, though that could be a good thing I guess. One of my very good friends right now is married to someone who is 58, she's 35.
I modeled some when I was a teenager (very small time stuff) so I wasnt a bad looking girl and he was maybe a 4 on a scale of 10 but he took care of me. Not financially but as a friend.
Good luck in your golden years!
