I'm reading JB's article on figuring caloric needs. I figured mine using the formulas given, and was just wondering if these are ok for females to use as well. I do need to gain, but it's about 800-900 cals more than I'm used to. Does that seem high or am I just scared?...lol.

probibly a little bit of both depending on your tentancies to gain fat.

If you're already aware of what your diet is and it's clean (blah blah blah), and your maintaining then adding 1k calories all at once might not be the best plan. But it might be something that you put in your window to eventually achieve.

adding a couple hundred every other week (or once a month) would probibly be a better way to maintain lean while "bulking".

Gobbla put it nicely.

When I first started to follow Scrawny to Brawny, the amount of food JB had me eating was crazy! I never thought I'd be able to eat that much food so I took it slow just like Gobbla told you to do. I realized that I didnt gain much if any fat when I put on 7LBS in 8 weeks. So I'm just trying to say that JB does know his stuff and I'm sure if you take it slow the results will be very nice and you should have little fat to show for all that muscle you'll have on that new frame!

I wouldn't make a jump like that all at once. All calculators should be considered a basic starting point. All of them, even JB's, can be extremely off. If I ate the amount of food that JB recommends, I'd blow up like a big fat balloon.

TG, first of all, on the main page your subject line reads, "Question about JB's Massive..."

I was a little wary of launching my cals that high too. He is known for recommending higher amounts than most. But his p+c/ p+f strategy seems to keep the fat off!

With any drastic change in calorie intake, you should take anywhere from 7-10 days to ramp up or down to the amounts recommended. Perhaps even longer if it's extreme. Don't forget that all of these things are intended to take effect over longer periods of time, so using an extra week or two to prep yourself isn't a bad thing. So add an extra 100 cals a day for three or four days, see how it feels, stick with that surplus of 400 cals for a couple days, then try adding 100 more. If after a week you really can't imagine stomaching more, stick with your current amount. After 10 days or so, if you've already gained weight (and check whether your BF% has gone up too!) then you can gauge which direction to move your cals. If you have NOT gained weight, then keep on until you reach JB's numbers!

Hope that helps some.

Also, if it means anything to you, before I had to stop StB, I put on 9 pounds in 9 weeks, and my bf% did not change. Short of robbing a bank, I couldn't afford to continue, although I dearly wish I could! (Robbing a bank might buy me a few more weeks on StB, but eventually I'd likely end up in jail, and I hear they don't separate p+c/p+f for you, unless you do, uh... certain favors for the cooks... and I'm not that dedicated to mass gain! )

*Is that your midsection in your avatar? If so... damn!!! I think those lines (the ones we call "penis lines", which obviously are not penis lines for you... I guess you can think of something more appropriate for them... I mean I do have a name or two, but maybe I shouldn't post them here... I'll just call them visible hip lines) are very sexy! Your man is a lucky bastard!

Thanks everyone for your responses!

That is so funny how my subject line reads...lol.

Yes, RH, it's me Thanks for the compliments.

I will take everyone's advice into consideration. I was reading part 2 last night at 1am...not the best time of day to take in all the info about how to plan your meals. So I will be reading again today. I want to start this rather slowly just because I'm not even fully back at the gym and won't be for a while..but I do need to put on a couple pounds, and of course I want them all to be lean Good to hear the program works

Make sure to read Massive Eating Reloaded (I & II), as well. One of those covers getting from your calories, today, to the calories of Massive Eating. It also points out that ME is just an estimate to use as a starting point. You might have to eat less (or even more) to see results.

I need to eat less, I think Johnka needs to eat more.

TG,

I'm with Lost Dog. Take a look at Massive Eating Reloaded. In it Jb explains how to build up your calories and ratio's based on how your body is responding. It worked very well for me as I made bi-weekly adjustments until I started gaining fat and then backed off to an earlier level to keep gaining with no fat gain.
