Would it be okay to cook a whole bunch of oatmeal on Sunday, throw it in the fridge and reheat a portion of it every morning for breakfast? Or maybe eat it cold?

It sets up pretty thick. If you have it with milk it may loosen up a little. I would make some and try it out to see if you like it.

I often make 2-3 servings are put the rest in the fridge.

Some people make Irish or Steel Cut Oatmeal in huge batches and freeze it in portions. That stuff has to cook a long, long time, so big batches help.

someone on this board (sorry not to beable to give credit) had the best idea. I like oatmeal alot, especially the steel cut that takes forever to cook. BUT I really dislike it reheated, it just feel/taste good to me. Here's what "they" suggested: Take whatever portion you want for say breakfast. I do 1/4 cup dry steel cut oats, pour in bowl. Boil appropriate amount of water in microwave. say 1/2-3/4 cup for 2 minutes in microwave. Pour over oats in bowl, cover w/saran wrap and let sit on counter overnight. Pop in microwave for a minute or 2 (experiment w/water amount, its a little tricky, the next morning you dont want much more than a little sitting on top). I swear it comes out like you just made it. Its the soaking overnight that does it. This is the interpretation I took on it and it has worked wonderfully. Im sure you could also do it a few hours before anytime of day. Just plan ahead.

Question: is there anything wrong with Quaker Oats? Plain, the 1 minute and/or the old fashioned, bc thats what I've been eating?

Nothing's wrong with those. It's all about texture and the speed of digestion. Nutritionally, they are the same.

Here's a good read on the subject from Johnka.
Johnka's oatmeal articles at johnberardi.com

The top three are "oatmeal related."

great top article...

So the main differences i seem to be noticing:

Rolled oats, or old-fashioned oats: Cook in 5 to 15 minutes.

Quick oats: cooking time to 3-5 minutes. While they cook quicker, lack hearty texture and nutty flavor of less-processed varieties.

Instant oats: They need only be mixed with a hot liquid. They usually have flavorings and salt added. processing removes all traces of original texture and rich flavor.

I currently have a huge tub of rolled/old fashions oats , and all i do is add milk, whey, and microwave 3/4 c of oats in it for 1 min 35 seconds on high.... it gives it a warm and nice consistancy, but are they being cooked all the way through? If not, is there any nutrional detriment or loss in this?

EDIT: Stupid question, ive seen people eating dry oats, raw , right outta the tub, so i'll assume its okay to do what im doing.
