Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
For some reason the relationship between obese and drinkers of diet soda don't surprise me. When I am eating clean, and I drink a diet coke, it makes me feel awfull. I replaced my diet coke with green tea, or crystal light.
I'm glad to see that they at least point out that correlation is not causation. Take, for example, someone who goes to McDonalds and orders a couple burgers, large fries, and a Diet Coke; Obviously the cutting back of sugar from the Coke isn't going to make enough of a difference, it's just something that people want as a quick-tweak to justify to themselves that they're being better on some sort of 'diet'. If, however, you like something to drink that has flavor and not caffeine, a diet soda is nice (in my case, I like one while sitting around at night). I do like Green Tea, but I drink coffee during the day, and green tea has caffeine.
That may be just what happens when we offer our bodies the sweet taste of diet drinks, but give them no calories. Fowler points to a recent study in which feeding artificial sweeteners to rat pups made them crave more calories than animals fed real sugar.
"If you offer your body something that tastes like a lot of calories, but it isn't there, your body is alerted to the possibility that there is something there and it will search for the calories promised but not delivered," Fowler says"
I think that's where the whole self control thing comes into play. Personally, I drink 1 can of Diet Soda per day, and it has never equated to eating more or eating poorly. As long as the only food I have available to me is good, clean food, then I'm not worried about it. And in the instances of bad food being available at a party or happy hour, that's when the self control kicks in. I'd rather have a Diet Coke at a happy hour than a brew. That's just me though...

Your diet coke has more caffeine that my cup of green tea does. The diet part implies that there is no calories or sugar, and has nothing to do with caffeine. If you're looking for no caffeine then you might want to buy Diet, caffeine free coke.
Also, I think that once they spend more time looking at this, there will be much more then meets the eye.

There is one word that solves the majority of lifes problems. Moderation.

The 130+ oz. of water per day, for me, negates the caffeine. You said it above, moderation.
And something's wrong with the fact that you are worried this much about Diet soda, but want to have beer as a PWO shake.

Caffeine really isn't that bad, if you drink enough water to negate the de-hydration effects it has. Something that I do, is if my soda is 12 oz., I drink an EXTRA 12-24 oz. of water as a check. If Johnka happens into this thread, I'd like to see what he has to say. A lot of people will have a cup of coffee, or even straight caffeine pills prior to workouts to get the extra push. Just have to make sure you drink your water...

Oh I know, and it was a good article. I think Diet Soda gets a bad rap though. I will agree, it's not ideal, water and tea are far better. I just enjoy a Diet Soda every now and then. Yes it does have caffeine, but like you said, most teas have caffeine. Not as much sodium in there as people think either. Not optimal, but not pure death either.

Yes, that part is true, but I didn't say that I drink Diet Coke at night; I do indeed buy caffeine-free soda for myself, I was just using Diet Coke as a generic example in the McDonald's case.
[Edit] I did just read the part about kidding about caffeine, but it's no biggie, and in fact not even the point of this topic, just something that came to mind for me since I've considered this matter in the past
Emartin...

Interesting post from somebody who downed about 8 brews at the last happy hour.
