Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
While I'm not a strict follower of Berardi's nutrional programs, I do believe that most of his principals are sound and worth incorporating into a daily diet. I try to follow as many as possible, using his Habits my "high bar."
One question comes to my mind, over and over again. When he says that one can eat "starchy carbs or grains," but only in the post exercise window (3 or so hours), what does he mean be exercise? Does a cardio workout count? Intervals/HIIT? Or, does he mean lifting only?
My wife is a pretty healthy cook, compared to most Americans. Most days, it's lean meats, fish, and veggies at the house. But, the rest of the family still likes their rice, pasta, and breads. When she cooks, I like to eat what they eat, when possible. Bread and rice are easy to skip. Pasta's a bit harder...
I almost always have at least a cardio workout, but not always lifting, just before I get home for dinner. Just wondering how this fits in with Berardi's "Habits."
You still need to replenish glycogen stores after cardio just as you do after lifting. The only way to do this effectively is by eating starchy carbs(or in the case of PWO shakes a lot of people have simple carbs).
Slighty off topic, but the problem I have with not eating starchy foods except in that three hour window is that i'm a carb addict. Yea, veggies are nice. Low GI foods taste good and all, but i get most of my energy from starchy carbs. They give me my enthusiasm and zest for life.
Also, if you look at meditarrean people, they eat lots of starchy foods and have pretty lean figures.

Lost Dog, I can't speak for JB, but I assume he's talking about any exercise, cardio included.
Sharkbait, I think the carbs that JB is saying to avoid outside of the PWO window are carbs that induce a large and quick insulin response. Stuff like potatoes and sugar. Not necessarily starchy carbs, because that includes beans, which are cool any time.
JB's diet is designed to maximize 2 things: body composition and overall health. Sure, you can safely eat grains and bread as a sedentary person, as long as you're getting sufficient other nutrients. But if you're an active person and you want to maximize lean body mass and minimize body fat, then JB's method is incredibly effective.
Oh Johnka, I have no doubts that JB's methods are incredibly effective at maximizes lean body mass and minimizing fat gain. I just love potatoes, bread and pasta WAAAYYYY too much to only eat them at certain times of the day.
Side note part 2: I really like the recipes you have on your website! My mom actually wants me to print some out so she can try them!

Shark- as long as you as those starchy carbs you are eating fit into you total daily caloric and carb requirements, you should be fine. If the food is clean, eat it. I know that is ingnoring a lot of theories on nutrient timing, but generally following those guidelines that I mentioned is a safe way to eat.
