Professor I have a question?

My wife is worried about diabetes, her family has seen all form from hypo-glycemia to type II and one of her cousins has insulin dependant diabetes(?). She (we) are looking for some resources to help understand and a tools (diet plan) to get a handle on this before it becomes a problem. She has noticed energy spikes and valleys and the sugar cravings.

Details: Me 38 - Her 34 two girls 7 & 4

We are both active - weights 3 -4 x week
plus walks , chasing the kids walking the dog

What would you reccomend? Is there a book that lays this out in an easy to follow/use format?

Not recently...last time was when she was pregnant....she was borderline gestational diabetic.

Her mom is hypo-glycemic, and most of her aunts and uncle have type2.

Do you think that she might have type-2 or type-1? Either way, why don't you use the resouces you have like keto-strips and blood-glucose monitors to see if she has the signs on diabetes, ie; high fasting blood-sugars and/or ketones.

BTW, I have been a type-1 diabteic since the afe of two so if you need any more help lemme know.

Tin, i would just take this in little steps and first have her go to the doc and get some fasted blood work done (all of it, blood glucose, cholesterol, etc), and then go from there. i have a ton of diabetics in my family but, my blood glucose levels are fine so don't base the chances of her getting it simply by family history, at least not yet.

Thanks guys,

Rip: No I don't think she does...but she has noticed a change in the last year on in how her body is quick to put on fat but really slow at taking it off. That along with the energy swings and cravings leads me to look at at blood surgar issues.

Wing: I will talk to her about it. I have a feeling that it is more her diet than a medical condition currently.

On top of all this we both want to eat cleaner/better for us and our kids.

Has anyone take a look at the book "Glucose Revolution Diet"

I agree with Wingsfan that your wife should go to a doctor to get checked.

If the issue is diabetes, or even metabolic syndrome, then there are a lot of dietary factors that can help. Basically, this involves eating primarily whole fruit and vegetables for your CHO source.

Thanks John,

CHO?...
I understand the whole fruits and veggies. In my limited reseach I came acroos a GI table that was crossed with a Glycemic Load scale...WTF is GL and hows does it relate to GI?

Another questions come to mind...does insulin/blood sugar levels have an impact on mood disorders, specifically post-partum depression?
