What do you guys look for buying fish oil caps?

I'm going to start taking fish oil and I'm not sure what brands, ect to look for.

I think its a good idea. I use Natrols or something along the lines of that.It has good DHA and EPA amounts.

On a side note: If I am unable to find flax seed oil, would it be a bad idea to take say 5 caps at one serving if the recipe calls for 5g of oil?

On the bottle it says to not exceed 3 a day. What do you guys think?

Different brands have different potency. The ones that I get (from CostCo) have 300mg of Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPS/DHA combined) in each 1000mg capsule.

There are other brands that have about half that, so you'd have to take twice the amount and count twice the fat calories to get the same amount of Omega-3s.

I've heard that there are even more potent capsules out there, with 600mg per 1000mg capsule. They are more pricey, but you only have to take 1/2 the number. From what I remember, they were like 3-4 times the cost, so I passed on them.

When you read the labels, make sure to take the number of capsules that they use in their calculations, too. Some make you think that they are more potent, but it's because they say it's so much per serving, not per capsule. Just read the whole label and not just the "headline" on the bottle.

A tablespoon of flax seed oil is in one of the recipes in StB. Probably on top of the salad you eat with it.

So how many miligrams is recommened and do you take them with every meal?

I take 12 capsules a day. Usually 3-4 at a time with meals or snacks.

I don't know what's recommended. I just follow the lead of a few folks that I figured did the research themselves... That could be bad, but I doubt it. One was Craig Ballantyne. Another was John Berardi. Their amounts pretty much meshed with each other's, plus several other folks here piped in with similar amounts over time.
