Question

Alright. I don't like cluttering up these forums with my questions. So I am combining two questions into one topic here and I hope no one minds.

Question one: How does Alcohol fit into the nutritional side of things on a diet or working out? From malt beers with tons of carbs and small alc content, to hard liquors with a great deal of alcohol content how does this play into fitness and what are dangerous amounts when balancing it with a diet?

Question two: According to the 7 good nutritional habbits outlined by John Berardi, all carbs should come from fruits and veggies except for the workout shakes and what-not. Where does that leave us with Breads and Low-carb sodas like 7-up plus (Which I really, . . . REALLY like.)?

Alcohol: 1g of alcohol = 7 calories
So, how does it fit in? Well, the calories add up quick. The main thing with alcohol is the way your system handles it. Your system tends to want to take care of the alcohol first, which means anything you eat while drinking large amounts will NOT process normally: protein won't be going to build muscle, carbs won't be burned as energy, fat will be stored, etc.
Now, something like a single can of Miller Lite is just 96 cals, and won't cause any major difficulties. But if you're drinking a lot, then not only are you building up the cals, but you're REALLY asking for fat gain when you eat while doing it.
As for the 7up: I'd bet Berardi would say keep it to 1-2 times a week. Bread? Hmmm... I dunno... I keep it to the first part of the day. Berardi would likely recommend having it only with lean meat, if at all.

Even the plus version with 3 carbs 2 from sugar and 10 cals? If so that's fine, I'll just become a tea, water, and coffee fan.

Well, there's a lot of debate (and bad rumors) about the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas... but as far as calories and fat gain goes, that should be fine.

I would highly recommend sticking mainly with green tea, coffee and water.

diet soda is fine. you should not drink them in place of water. one a day will not affect you one way or the other. artificial sweetners may not be harmless, but having a diet or low cal/ carb drink every now and then is fine. just make sure you drink water the rest of the time.

My suggestion:
Save your 7up and beers as drinks for your cheat meals.
