I just got to sample a Trader Joe's product called "Snapeas". They are baked green peas (the entire pod). Ingredients: green peas, corn oil, salt.

1 serving (22 pieces)
Fat 8
Sat 1
Trans 0
Carbs 14
Fiber 2
Protein 5

So what do you think? No better than regular chips? Does the corn oil and/or the baking process eradicate the benefits of green peas? If eaten with protein (meat, etc.) would this be an acceptable snack?

I know the fat+salt= healthy snack thing is nearly always too good to be true.

Are these the things you are talking about? I'm going to assume so.

I get those from time to time as well and they look like a reasonable snack but I thought I remembered rice as an ingredient as well -- which along with the corn oil is not that great.

And, even though they're shaped like a peapod, they are way too uniform to be actual peapods. My guess is that its processed, then shaped to look like a peapod.

Having said that I could eat about six bags of those in a sitting! And feedback from someone who really knows what they're talking about would be great.

I love those things. I buy them since I have really bad cravings for chips, and those seem to help, well, those and sweet potato chips. I think as long as they're in moderation it's alright. However, I've just started eating them and then about 10 minutes later, the bag is empty and I feel like a jackass.

For those of us who have to keep an eye on the salt intake, I would be curious to know the Na content, too. I've never tried these - never heard of them - but I assume they are also salted.

I don't think I've ever seen these things. If they're fried in corn oil though, I'd avoid them.

Unhappy

I found these at the new Whole Foods in Austin (awesome place!) on Saturday. I ate them but it's the last bag I'll likely ever buy. I was just curious due to this thread.

Yeah, they're nothing outstanding... just curious more than anything about the benefits (if any) of having the source "material" of an oily/salty snack being a pea instead of corn or potato. Looks like not much!

They're baked, not fried. Don't know if that matters much though...
