Going over my shopping list, I'm thinking about adding rolled oats to it. I've heard theres some nice benefits from oats, but there are a lot of carbs. Would it be a good idea for someone trying to drop some weight to eat oats? Maybe only on a basis of an hour before hitting the gym or afterwards? Not sure when a good time to eat them is, or if a person trying to lose weight even should eat them.

My diet is mostly protein (eggs, fish, chicken, beef, nuts) like 4 meals a day and a whey protein/creatine shake before/during/after the workout. I searched the forum and I'm trying that Adam's diet for now, but I'm still trying to find a source of carbs for before the workout so I don't "crash". Maybe oats an hour before?

Enlighten me

Oats are probabaly the best complex carb source there is. They are unprocessed, taste great, good carbs, protein, and fat...nothing wronf with them.

Oats would be great to eat pre and post workout for a carb source.

Baseline - I think oats are great for a pre-workout carb. I usually add a scoop of whey protein to the oats and lap it up an hour before going to the gym. Just watch your serving size.

Sounds good! I think I'll do small servings of Oats pre and post workout. Maybe an apple every other day or two in place of the oats just to change it up

I've been reading up on complex vs simple carbs. Obviously the oats are complex, and an apple would be simple carbs. To my knowledge, the complex carbs like oats will take a while before you actually feel the energy from the carbs. So, being eating something like this an hour before going to the gym, would I even be getting much benefit from it in that little of time, in terms of avoiding crashing during a gym session? I thought I read somewhere someone said they drink kool-aid before going to the gym *scratching head*

Baseline- If you have oats 60-90mins before going to the gym, you will defintley have energy from them...I know I do. Having an apple or some other fruit along with the oats for your pre-workout meal would be fine as well. Remember, even though an apple does have simple carbs, the simple carbs are natural and healthy. The apple won't produce a big insulin spike like other simple carbs so the body reacts to it as if it were a complex carbs. Basiclly, I'm saying fruits are good.
