Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
I've been using whey protein powder for the past 6 months, 4-5 of them without a hitch. But recently I've noticed that I've been getting varying stomach discomfort. Sometimes it will only be a minor discomfort in my stomach region and at other times its been very painful pains in the abdominal region. Initially I thought it kind of protein powder I was using, so I switched. Although that wouldn't make any sense because I've only used two kinds, prorated from costco and Optimum Nutrition. I've used both months ago without a problem. I thought I was lactose intolerant, but I can eat and drink milk, cheese, yogurt, and the ON jug says its suitable for people who are lactose intolerant. So I'm stumped at the moment. Anywho have any insight or advice?
I've also been having stomach problems for a while now. I'm pretty sure I narrowed it down to either peanut butter or protein. Both are known to cause an increase in stomach acidity and since no one is built equally, some people don't respond too well to it. I'm one of them I'm hoping it's the peanut butter and not the protein but I do know that once the stomach is agitated, protein definetly does NOT help.

I'm with Johnka on this one. I used a whey concentrate for all my supplementation for a long while, and got some serious stomach discomfort and flatulence after a few months (I use it in oatmeal for breakfast and cottage cheese before bed, as well as PWO). I've since switched to an isolate for PWO and casein for other times of day, actually Milk Protein Isolate, which is approx. 80/20 casein/whey, and I haven't had upset stomach issues since. I think it might have had to do with digestion, as whey is digested quickly while casein is broken down much more slowly.

Here are the ingredients..."QuadPlex Protein Blend (Ultrafiltered Whey Protein Concentrate, Cross Flow Microfiltered Whey Protein Isolate, Ion Exchange Whey Protein Isolate"
Looks like both so would this cause an upset stomach?
I have the same problem with whey. I am not very familiar with the different protein power products. Could someone give me an example or brand to go with? Also could someone recommend some websites that I can purchase these items from? I hate going to GNC, I always leave with the feeling I just bought something I don't need for way to much money.

Since whey is giving me problems in general I am thinking of switching to egg or soy protien. Is there any disadvantage to this? I see that it is a big more expensive, but if it saves me from a 4 hour long stomach ache its worth it.

The advantage of whey over egg or soy protein is that whey digests much faster, which is optimal for PWO.
I'll have to join in as well, as I had the same problem with one type of Golds Whey protein I picked up over here in Japan. I knew it was the protein because I would get stomach cramps right after I drank it. I found that when I mixed it with water instead of milk, though, it dissolved more completely and really lightened up on my stomach. This allowed me to get through the batch, at least, and then I switched to a different brand. Since then, I've tried three different brands of whey protein that advertised “dissolves easily” and haven't had a problem with any of them.
At any rate, the next time you stir in the powder make sure it's thoroughly dissolved and see if it makes any difference.
